Waste Manage

by Shreya Chaudhuri | 12-02-2021 18:14 recommendations 0

Hi there,

Waste management is an often overlooked and undermined topic that runs our societies, yet any focus on how exactly our waste gets managed and how it impacts the planet is usually unheard about. Plastic waste management is especially a complicated process. In America, there is plastic in pretty much everything, yet 9% of it is recycled. Most of the plastic ends up in landfills, continuing to pollute the earth far beyond its use.

Thankfully, there are several programs that aim to combat this heavy pollution. TerraCycle accepts all plastic types 1-7, as only types 1 and 2 are commonly recycable at local recycling centers. However, sturdier plastic that takes far longer to be broken down are usually types 3 and up. Setting up TerraCycle stands in every public space could greatly reduce plastic pollution. Education is another effective tool of promoting eco-friendly practices from a young age.

At my school, I co-started a TerraCycle drive. My friend and I handed out cups to each teacher in which the teachers would collect all of their dried out plastic stationery like highlighters, pens, and more. We would then drop by every three weeks to empty out these cups and after we would have a box full of the stationery we would send the package to the TerraCycle recycling headquarters, thus helping our schools become slightly closer to becoming zero-waste.

    Hello Shreya!
    It's your SJ mentor.

Hope things are fine with you.
Thank you for writing a report that introduces your thoughts and actions about waste.
Our lives after Pandemic increased waste.
More disposable products are being used to eliminate the risk of infection and most are not being recycled.
Plastic can be reused again and again, so I hope to establish a process that can be recycled by material accurately marking the material.
It would be better if you could introduce in detail how the Terracycle project handles plastic waste.

    Green cheers!

    Sincerely,
    SJ mentor.

    Hello Shreya,
    this is your mentor WooJoo.

    Warm greetings from South Korea!
Thank you for sharing your last thematic report of the term! :D
I agree that the importance and value of waste management is sometimes underestimated, and even it is sometimes put on the back burner.
Every day we are producing tons of wastes, which the majority is plastic,
and the recycling yield is very low.
I am surprised that TerraCycle is collecting all 7 types of well-known plastics, which is an amazing action.
Also, I am so happy that you are collecting wasted school materials from your teachers to give them to TerraCycle!
Hopefully more students increase their awareness and co-work with TerraCycle to increase the recycling.

Please write bit longer next time, since it is falling short of length.

    Green cheers!

    Regards,
    WooJoo
