Finance world: Climate change challenge

Business & Environment: Let us enter the finance world and the mind of HBS in the climate change challenge!

Businesses are on the rise recently, making it a common and effective job. However, only a few leaders are fighting for a green Earth. So, how does business harm the environment? How does Harvard Business School see the issue? What is their role?

business is an association of people who sell products such as machines, clothes, cars, medicaments, etc. So, a commercial enterprise which may be in the form of :

1-A sole trader: An enterprise run and owned by one individual.

2-Partnership: A collaboration between two industries with mutual interests.

3-Company: Describes large businesses with many employees.

For example, Google, Facebook, Starbucks, Microsoft, Jungsik: a Korean restaurant, Samsung (shout-out to Eco-Generation's amazing team :D), and many other inspirations. They are businesses that started small and reached success hand in hand!

All the members are responsible for the organization's growth. It is important to note that businesses are not non-profit charities. They have to give and take money!

We should be aware that most businesses release a large amount of CO2 every day. In fact, a single search on a desktop computer generates about 7g of CO2, says a Harvard University physicist. Simply, the total of daily Google searches multiplied by the estimated CO2 emitted/search multiplied by the total days of a year:(3 293 250 000 000¡¿7g) ¡¿ 365 = 8 414 253 750 000 000g. Which is equivalent to 8 414 253 750 Tons of CO2 released every year due to Google searches. But are all the industries ready to cut their part in the industrial pollution? Considering that efforts from most commerces are required for the sake of human's lives. Auspiciously, Bloomberg confirms saying: "The U.K. government revealed plans to slash the amount of carbon dioxide spewed out by factories and other industrial processes by two-thirds within the next 15 years." While the UK inspires the world, the USA discusses industries' problems. Born in the United States, David Crane tries to solve the energy emission issue. He joins NRG company to become its CEO in 2003, which fired him in 2015. This event proves that some organizations don't want to make a change. In a short time, Crane joins Pegasus Capital Advisors to complete his plans. In April 2018, David Crane visited the American university HBS for a fireside chat. The energy industry worldwide in 2018 is a six trillion dollar, it slows down the progress in cleaning energy. The 2nd largest power generation company in the USA failed to be based on renewables.

It is hard for industries to be environmentally responsible because the cost of renewable is decreasing. To satisfy both sides, the world demands a green economy. All the tools are available, but the most important step is missing: new business models. This is what Harvard Business School is shedding light on now. As in new ideas that create new job opportunities. They will connect business and the environment directly. The environment makes the place we live in, the nature itself with all the living creatures and non-living creatures. Due to the lack of responsibility, many species are at risk of extinction, including sapiens. The time to act is now!

As said above, business comes in many forms, it grows together and becomes a family. Most industries release an amount of CO2 every day, Google being a large example. Some organizations are avoiding the green economy concept and are not environmentally responsible. Harvard Business School is a great teacher which is raising awareness on the current issue.

Thank you!

    Hi Elina,
    this is your mentor Yuseon:D

I found it surprising that using Google as a search engine is equivalent to 8 414 253 750 Tons of CO2 released every year. What a surprise. We really should start reducing the emissions of CO2 by stopping daily selfish actions and minimize their needs.

You have mentioned a lot about Harvard Business School in your reports, and I wonder if your resources are from their institutes. I couldn't find other relations than this.

Hope to read your next informative report as well,
    Yuseon

    Hi Elina,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)

I love how the sources used ¡°slash¡± to describe its cut on emissions. It makes the article so vivid! Anyways, I??ve heard of free economy, centralized economy and mixed economy but not green economy. Hopefully in the future more businesses would be interested in the concept of green economy and comply with it!

Also it was interesting to realize that the large companies you??ve mentioned started small as well! Since large companies are responsible for releasing more CO2, these companies and the consumers of the companies should seriously think about the future actions!

Much appreciated! Best of luck to the next articles to come as well ;)

    Green Cheers,
    Debbie
