IUCN Red List (Red Data Book) is a list of endangered plant and animal species with a brief description of their modern habitats. There are international, national and local versions of the Red Book. The Red Data Book was published in Georgia in 1982. Part I includes rare animals, part II - plants, part III - monuments of inorganic nature. The animal world of Georgia is rich and diverse. Its territory is home to 3,000 species of animals, 19 of which are listed in the Red Book. Among them are: wild goat (capra aegagrus), goitered gazelle (gazella subgutturosa), caucasian red deer (cervus elaphus), striped hyena (hyeana hyeana) and west caucasian tur (capra caucasica). Wild goat- One of the ancestors of the domestic goat is widespread in Georgia in Tusheti, Khevsureti. Inhabits hard-to-reach, rocky slopes up to 4,200 m above sea level. It feeds on grasses and shrubs. Lives 12-15 years. It is on the verge of extinction due to mass destruction. Goitered gazelle- The once beautiful hoofed animal that once prevailed in the fields of Georgia are now on the verge of extinction. Theay are widespread in deserts and semi-deserts of Asia Minor (Anatolia), South Caucasus, Central Asia. In the past in Georgia they were found in the eastern part of the Shirak Valley, in the Gardabani and Samgori valleys. They are nomadic animals and feed mainly on grasses. Caucasian red deer- They belong to bovidae family. They are herding and polgygamous animals of the deer family. There are several subspecies of it. In Georgia most of them are in our reserves (Borjomi, Lagodekhi). They feed mostly on plants and live up to 20 years. Striped hyena- A carnivorous mammal of the hyaenidae family. They are the smallest of the hyenas. Inhabit 10 kilometers from the water. They have gray or light brown fur with dark stripes. They also have strong jaws and teeth and can easily crush large bones as well. They often attack domestic or wild small animals. They are widespread in Africa and Asia. In Georgia a small amount is preserved in West Georgia. The number of hyeans has significantly reduces and because of that is included in all Red Data Books. West Caucasian tur- is endemic to Caucasus. This means that west Caucasian tur is not found in any other part of the world and inhabits only in the Caucasus. It is included in the Red Data Book and hunting is prohibited. It is found in West Georgia. |

Hi Tatuli,
This is your mentor Debbie. :)
I knew there would be a list of endangered species in something like an encyclopedia, but I didn??t know it was called a Red List! Sounds interesting. You could even make this into a series perhaps? Maybe next time you could write about plants and monuments of inorganic nature as well!
I would love to see some photos of wild goat, goitered gazelle or caucasian red deer as well. It would??ve been better if you included a couple of pictures in the report as well.
Green Cheers,

Debbie

Hi tatuli,
This is your mentor Yuseon:D
IUCN Red list was something I wasn't familiar with, so I searched for more information. It stands for International Union for Conservation of Nature as was founded in 1964. Since then it seems to be listing the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species. This might actually be a good way to bring awareness to saving the endangered ones and trying to preserve the ecosystem as it is.
Thanks for sharing this information! Hope we could hear some of your personal insights as well as information next time:)
Looking forward to your next report,
Yuseon
