Green Architecture and the Environment

With the rising pollution, rises the need to come about with practical solutions to decrease pollution levels and global warming. Who said that the infrastructure cannot support greenery and is to be associated only with the clearing of a green land? Green Architecture has proven this school of thoughts wrong! As the name suggests, it is something that incorporates greenery in the buildings. To be more precise, Green architecture is a philosophy of architecture that advocates sustainable energy sources, the conservation of energy, the reuse and safety of building materials, and the siting of a building with consideration of its impact on the environment. The Pixel Building in Australia is an example of Green Architecture.

 

India too contributes to the Green Architecture, as is seen by the Green Buildings that line the roadsides of the Indian streets. A green building is one which uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building.

The Indian green building council (IGBC) is the leading green building movement in the country.

The components of the Green Buildings that have been laid down by the IGBC are as follows:

•        i.          Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
•       ii.          Water Efficiency.
•      iii.          Environmentally Preferable Building Materials and Specifications.
•      iv.          Waste Reduction.
•       v.          Toxics Reduction.
•      vi.          Indoor Air Quality.
•    vii.          Smart Growth and Sustainable Development.

According to the IGBC, the Top Green Buildings in India are:

•        i.          Suzlon One Earth, Pune.
•       ii.          CII- Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, Hyderabad
•      iii.          ITC Maurya, New Delhi
•      iv.          Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan, New Delhi
•       v.          ITC Green Centre, Gurgaon
•      vi.          Infinity Benchmark, Kolkata

It is widely known that India uses the following Green Building materials, all of which are of course environmental friendly:

While most of the countries have made use of the noble idea of Green Architecture, it is yet on a small scale. To bring it on a much larger scale, that we see all of our buildings green, we must raise awareness and bring it to the governments notice, that we want a Green Architecture. And this is not just for India, but all nations for the earth provides support not just for one country, but for all the nations.
