Thematic Report -Green Architecture and the Environment

by Sainath Manikandan | 08-04-2021 20:33 recommendations 0

You would be surprised to know that more than 30% and up to 80% of carbon emissions globally is contributed by buildings. This is the reason for having green architecture or green buildings.

This is an approach to construct buildings that will minimize the harmful effects on our health and of course our environment.

So what does the green buildings help us with?

They use ecofriendly building materials and also the practices used for constructing the buildings are taken into consideration and making it environment safe. This attempt tries to safeguard water, materials, energy and air. Architects also consider the amount of space that they use for the construction. Meaning that they consider the overall impact in the short run as well as for our future generations.

What does one expect to have in a green building?

¡¤         Minimum use of land

¡¤         Maximum use of sunlight, wind

¡¤         Ventilation system to be efficient

¡¤         Landscaping

¡¤         Water saving plumbing system

¡¤         Energy saving appliances

¡¤         Solar power or wind power

¡¤         Non-toxic materials to be used for construction

¡¤         Construction materials such as stone, wood to be locally bought

¡¤         Recycle and reuse materials

¡¤         Rain water harvesting

¡¤         Reuse of grey water

¡¤         Good indoor environmental air quality

As such the construction of green buildings might differ and vary from one region or country to another due to various factors. Can you guess the factors? Yes, it might be due to climatic, cultural and economic priorities that varies.

1.      A building covered in solar panels and powered by a digital LED ceiling that can automatically adjust lighting needs

2.      A building which is home to many planted shrubs and saplings as they can absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen

3.      A building constructed taking into account the thermal mass and landscape taking into consideration the building¡¯s energy consumption. This will allow the environment to regulate internal temperature.

4.      Incorporate wind turbines in the buildings to fulfill the energy needs

Now the next question that might arise is that on whether Green Architecture is really effective or not.

For this to be effective and successful, the industries and individuals must work collaboratively to improve and innovate. Apart from that, these green buildings also offer a number of co-benefits which improves the health and happiness of the dwellers.

    Hi Sainath,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)

Thank you for writing about green architecture. The picture attached looks very ¡°
green¡± indeed! I see lots of plants but with the factors you suggested, I??m not sure if it??s actually a ¡°green building¡± or not. Haha, does it utilize the maximum use of land, or energy saving appliances, or does it satisfy other factors you??ve mentioned? I??m also curious about where the building is as well!

Perhaps next time you could expand on the factors you??ve mentioned as well. :D It would make your article much more engaging.

    Keep up with the work!

    Green Cheers,

    Debbie

Hi Sainath, this is your mentor Yuseon:D

I was also surprised to find out that 30% of the carban emmissions were from just operating buildings. Did you know that buildings also consume 30% of the energy used in total? It should not be surprising that as buildings are our main activity ground, it should not be a surprise for those results.

Nevertheless, it is still important for us to deliberately devise affective ways to operate the buidling with almost zero energy. That is why we need to design a building that could generate its own energy and try to use it as its main energy source.

Thanks for your well organized report. I enjoyed reading it.
    Keep up the good work:)
