What is Green Homes?

It is the initiative for the sustainable housing which promotes housing system that reduces the pressure on the natural, non renewable resources and carbon emission resulting in human well being, promotion of the green economy. Energy efficiency is maintained in building by eco friendly practices for water and waste management, collection of the rain water during harvesting and waste water recycling. The major objective of the green home is to promote sustainable housing technologies that contributes towards mitigating climate change and promoting green economy.

Why is Sustainable housing needed?

In the urban economy housing has the significant contribution. The demand for the construction of the buildings, extension of the colony is increasing day by day. There will be need of extra 1 million urban houses in the coming decades. So In order to meet the demand with the conventional building practices it will notoriously contribute to the pollutions and enhance the climate change factors. The various urban cities are facing extreme difficulties in the waste management, efficient energy management, and environmental pollutions. Growing climate issue has also exacerbate much pressure on the urban services. So for the enhancement of the sustainability and climate adaptability it is necessary to include eco friendly practices in the construction. To curb the energy consumption it is absolutely necessary to shift towards the alternative sources.

Materials used in the eco friendly house:

  •       Use of sustainable and environment friendly construction building materials
  •          Passive solar design for the efficient energy conservation
  •          Materials for the rain water harvesting and proper waste management
  •          Waste reduction, recycling apparatus
  •          Maintenance of the indoor spaces

Raw materials for the construction of the Green Buildings;

  •          Earthen materials
  •          Wood
  •          Bamboo
  •          Insulated concrete forms
  •          Earth Bags
  •          Fiber Glass
  •          Natural clay
  •          Stone
  •          Fiber cement
  •          Non VOC paints
  •          Steel

  •          Slate/stone roofing

Major goals of Green Buildings:

¡¤         Life cycle assessment

¡¤         Energy efficiency

¡¤         Water efficiency

¡¤         Indoor environmental quality enhancement

¡¤         Waste reduction

¡¤         Material efficiency

Hence, there are many buildings that are constructed with the aim to maintain the efficient ecological balances and the building constructed with this idea are environmentally sound, responsible and resource efficient throughout a building life cycle from planning to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and demolition. Being a residence of the rural region of Nepal, I can also see various green building constructed at village. I really like the mud house constructed at the country side where there is the natural air condition inside the house. The water are cooled down by the use of the earthen pot than refrigerator which ejects the ammonia gas. The hotels are made with the bamboo woods and they really seems so mesmerizing. Thus, green building is the concept and idea which has a major aim to make sound environment and stable ecosystem.

    Dear Sandhya,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)

I have to say, housing does consist of a big part of the urban economy - and it is taking more weight nowadays because of COVID-19. The pandemic has forced us into our houses and is not letting us go outside :(

Anyways, since time spent at home is so long, we should think more about how to make our building more ecofriendly. One thing, when you mentioned the ¡®recycling apparatus?? in materials used in eco-friendly house, do you mean a proper waste disposal method at home? Just being curious :D

Thanks for sharing with us, Sandhya! Looking forward to your May report as well :)

    Best,

Debbie

    Hi Sandhya,

    This is your mentor Yuseon:D

I think you have covered up most of the methods used in Green Buildings starting with materials and systematic solutions and their main goals. The shape and form doesn't actually matter as long as it is able to operate energy efficiently and eco-friendly.
Next time it would be even greater if you pick one subtopic and research about it further for our readers in Tunza:)

    Good work,
    Yuseon
