Sustainable and Organic Fashion In India

Fashion is a fundamental industry of human civilization. No matter what, humans thrive for a good look, fit clothes and a wardrobe full of different fabrics. However, with the advancement of technology, humans shifted towards the sinister path of Fast fashion rather than a sustainable one. Studies have shown that Fast fashion alone is responsible for almost 10% of carbon-emission in the world. Surfeit of trees and water that could have been shelter for flora and fauna, hunting grounds for the food-chain and could mend to the needs of 5 Million people is being used up by the vicious industry. But the story does not end in your wardrobe. The disposed fabrics account for millions of tons of plastic microfiber in the ocean. International Labor Organization (ILO) published in one of their reports that some branches of this industry are also involved in child and forced labor that exploits more than 170 million children. Not only humans, but animals too are oppressed, especially in the wool industry where goats (used for cashmere wool), rabbits (angora wool) and sheep can be skinned aggressively, creating open wounds and then later sent for slaughter. Silk industry is a threat to pollution, for it emits more greenhouse gases than any other fabric.

So, what is the alternative? Fast Fashion must be replaced by sustainable and eco-friendly clothes. These include use of organic fiber, recycled fiber, organic material and dyes, chemical and pesticide free fibers. Its production too should be free from forced labor. But production of sustainable clothes does not end the problem of Fast Fashion. Promotion of Sustainable Fashion must be done too. So next time you need to buy clothes, look for organic cotton clothes. Hemp and bamboo too are alternatives of the fabric. Nowadays, good quality of fake leather is available in the market. Cork leather, hemp; pineapple leaves leather, recycled flower leather and more innovative leather ideas flourish in the market. Other than clothes, cosmetic too can be made from eco-friendly sources that are plastic free.

In India, new brands and start-ups have been in rise that promotes sustainable fashion among the citizens. Out of these, some sites that I have found are exceptionally good and better than most of the Fast fashion sites popularized among us.

SUSTAINABLE FASHION IN INDIA

• B-LABEL: Uses hemp as fabric which is an eco-friendly fiber that uses less water and produces more treads.
• REFASH-UNCYCLED FASHION: Uses Eco-friendly fabrics.
• ADAH BY LEESHA: Uses scrap fiber and recycled plastic.
• NO NASTIES: Sustainable fashion, organic clothing

SUSTAINABLE COSMETIC IN INDIA

• DUISGUISE COSMETICS: Free from animal oil, plastic, pigment and harmful substance.
• THE SWITCH FIX: No plastic, cruelty-free, plant-based , water saving and non polluting

    Hi CHARU,
    This is your mentor Yuseon:D

You have conducted research and shared information regarding problems of fast fashion, and introduced some sustainable fashion brands in India. Fashion has a fast change in trend, and this is the major reason why we change our wardrobe almost every year.

As these quick changes definitely have negative effect to the environment, sustainable & organic should become the next fashion trend.

    Keep up the good work,
    Yuseon

    Hi Charu,

This is your mentor Debbie :)

Since 2019, Fast Fashion has become such a big trend that if you enter a clothing shop, you can witness new arrivals on a daily basis! But as you??e said, they involve the use of chemicals and excessive materials. Though the action of promoting sustainable clothing does not stop fast fashion immediately as you??e said, we should still try to find what??s best for the environment.

Thanks for a great article!

    Green Cheers,

    Debbie
