(Thematic Report) Electric vehicles (EVs)

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a critical component in achieving global climate change targets. EVs emit no greenhouse gas emissions directly because they run on energy. Since their introduction, electric cars (EVs) have advanced tremendously technologically, and they are now more popular than ever. Some drivers, however, remain unwilling to transition from traditional gas-powered vehicles, owing to perceptions that EVs still have the same flaws as they did in the past. While electric vehicles do have some disadvantages, they also offer certain advantages. The benefits of electric vehicles are lesser in nations with coal-intensive energy generation, and they can have equal lifetime emissions to the most efficient conventional vehicles, such as hybrid-electric models.


Let¡¯s see some advantages of electric cars:

a.     They're more ecofriendly.

Electric vehicles are better for the environment and it is sufficient motivation to invest. Electric vehicles do not have an exhaust system; hence they emit no pollutants. And, because gas-powered automobiles contribute significantly to the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, switching to an electric vehicle can assist to reduce ghg.

b.     Electrical energy is cheaper than gasoline.

Given that energy is substantially less expensive than gasoline, many EVs can operate at a third of that cost. And, because we would most likely charge your electric car in our garage, adding solar panels to our home can help save even more money on both our home and our EV.

c.     Maintenance is less frequent and therefore less costly.

Because electric automobiles are, well, electric, they don't require oil changes because they don't run on it (or any other maintenance related to combustion engines, for that matter). Moreover, EV's brakes don't wear out as quickly as a regular car's, which means you'll save even more money.

d.     Reduction in tax credits.

The owner of an electric vehicle, would probably get a reduction in tax just for reducing your environmental impact by driving a zero-emissions vehicle in many parts of the world. This scheme of reducing tax can certainly help to increase number of EV¡¯s.

Of course, nothing is perfect. Electric vehicle and conventional vehicle comparisons are difficult. They are affected by the vehicle's size, the accuracy of the fuel economy estimations employed, how electrical emissions are computed, projected driving patterns, and even the weather in the locations where the vehicles are utilized. There is no one-size-fits-all estimate that can be used everywhere.

Electric vehicles also do have drawbacks. Before you buy EV¡¯s be sure you are familiar with these disadvantages, there are a few things to think about.

a.     Most EVs have pretty short ranges

EV range is improving all the time, but it's still one of the biggest concerns for buyers picking between electric and conventional vehicles. EV¡¯s range has continued to improve which is a positive sign.

b. Recharging can take some time.

As EV¡¯s requires electricity, recharging your electric vehicle takes significantly longer than filling up a normal car at the petrol station, which takes only a few minutes. It has been found that most electric car engines charge in four hours or less, some take as long as 15 to 20 hours.

c. Charging station availability is inconsistent.

Perhaps you live in a region where electric vehicles are rather widespread, and so EV charging stations are readily available for your convenience. But what if you're on a road trip or visiting family in a more suburban or distant location and need to charge your phone? Fortunately, as electric cars become more common, so do the charging stations they require.

d.     There are fewer options available.

There's no doubting that there's a wider range of electric vehicles than ever before, and there's no hint that this trend will slow down. However, when it comes to the looks of an EV, you simply don't have as many options, especially when compared to how much you can personalize conventional vehicles.

There are also significant ambiguities around the emissions related with the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries, with different studies giving vastly disparate figures. Battery production emissions may have a greater impact on the climate.

    This is your mentor Yuseon:D

    I've noticed that there's a wider range of electric vehicles than ever before, and this is cerainly good news for green vehicle users. However, as the disadvantages you've mentioned stays, it would act as a huge obstacle for people with eco-centric minds who are considering to buy a new car. Hope these would get resolved soon.

    This is your mentor Debbie. :)

    Since I drive an EV, I have to say I really agree with the disadvantages you??ve mentioned! Compared to conventional engine-driven cars, an EV is definitely difficult to handle in terms of the time it takes to charge and the shorter range. But at the end, it is indeed cheaper and greener! Well, we have to wait and see - there might be even greener option of a vehicle in the future. ;)
