[THEMATIC REPORT] ELECTRIC CARS OR EVs

by CHARU SMITA | 14-06-2021 17:04 recommendations 0

Almost everything we use in our day to day life has now been renovated to be eco-developed. The same stands for our cars. The cars which were once signs of pollution are now being replaced by better versions of the same. Eco-vehicles are available in many versions and designs. One of them is Electric cars or EVs.

EVs function by being plugged into a charge point and taking electricity from the grid. The energy is stored in batteries that accelerate the car more than traditional cars. This also results in the car being lighter to drive. This means that the car will be both eco-friendly and user-friendly: a feature that will be the future of the industry.

However, there is still many debates as to the question if electric cars are really eco-friendly as mentioned. There are questions as to if the batteries and grids produce greenhouse emissions or not. It is a myth that EVs account for more carbon footprint than traditional cars. In reality, EVs have a smaller carbon footprint even when accounting for the electricity used for charging. EVs are not 100% environmental-friendly due to the production of its batteries and the energy used to charge it. Depending on whether the electricity is generated using non-renewable sources such as coal, natural gas or renewable sources such as wind or solar energy: carbon footprint might vary. However, if we manage to develop clean energy generators, then setting up EVs will be a major step towards sustainability.

In India, EV industry is a growing industry that is expected to be a huge hug for EVs in the next five years. There are nearly 250000 EVs on the road at present. Out of these, two wheelers account for 80% of the number and the rest are four-wheelers. India unveiled the ¡®National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020¡¯ in 2013 to address the issues of National energy security, vehicular pollution and growth of domestic manufacturing capabilities. Reiterating its commitment to Paris Agreement, the Government of India has plans to make  a major shit to Electric Vehicles by 2030.

    Hi Charu,

    This is Yuseon Mentor! :D

Wow what a sharp perspective of debating whether EVs are truly green vehicles.
Batteries would have certain amount of Carban emissions, but I estimate it to be
less than original cars. As we define 'Green Vehicles' as cars that emit less amount relatively, it might be correctly defined as "green".

Thanks for sharing your insight with us!

    Dear Charu,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)

Not only India but the world is going towards EVs.
But I think you??re very accurate in saying that EV??s are not 100% eco-friendly.
Although it??s still better than traditional engine-driven cars, it??s our common goal to make the generators and the production process more eco-friendly!
Thanks for introducing the often neglected inefficiency of EVs :)

    Green Cheers,
    Debbie

    Greetings CHARU,

The report is very insightful.. It is true that EVs will play a critical role to harness green house emissions especially in countries like India where the population is highly elevated.

    Thanks for the report,
