[Thematic Report] Carbon Neutrality in the United States

by Jisoo Hwang | 09-08-2021 17:20 recommendations 0

On his first day in office, President Biden has rejoined the Paris Agreement and promised citizens that the United States will be aiming to reach net zero emissions economy-wide by no later than 2050. Contrasting with former President Trump¡¯s policies to somewhat deny climate change, the US is now facing a somewhat brighter future in terms of environmental sustainability. As the government declared its goal for reaching carbon neutrality, companies within the US have also pledged to go carbon neutral. Here are some top 3 examples excerpted from https://www.gobankingrates.com/money/business/16-companies-that-have-pledged-to-go-carbon-neutral/.

  1. Amazon: Amazon announced to reach carbon neutrality by 2040. The company has already started investing in solar farms in Virginia and ordering 100,000 electric delivery vehicles.

  2. Apple: In July 2020, Apple announced its plan to become carbon neutral across its entire business by 2030. The company's "climate roadmap" includes steps to increase the use of low carbon and recycled materials in its products, expand its energy efficiency, move its entire supply chain to renewable energy sources, improve its processes and materials, and actively work to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

  3. Microsoft: Microsoft has in fact taken a step further - they announced in January 2020 that they would be carbon negative by 2030. Microsoft had already been working to achieve carbon neutrality since 2012 by offsetting emissions, but the company said that it would now be working to actively reduce emissions. To do this, Microsoft will be shifting to 100% renewable energy, electrifying its global campus operations vehicle fleet and pursuing carbon-zero certifications for its campus modernization projects.

Whether the government and these companies will keep their promises to reach carbon neutrality is solely uncertain, but the fact that such influential organizations are aiming for environmentally friendly strategies is notable. Until carbon neutrality is obtained, these big organizations must constantly seek to pursue carbon-zero technologies and set an ideal role model figure for the rest of the public.

    Hi Jisoo,

    This is your mentor Yuseon:D

Thanks for introducing the three reknown companies that promised to participate
in the 'green project'. As the three could be said one of the biggest industries in
US and also globally, it must seem give a huge positive impact in the whole carbon
emissions. The government should also not hesitate to support these kind of actions
    of companies, to encourage others.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Dear Jisoo,

    This is your mentor Debbie.

It is well important for huge organizations to set a good role model for the public to achieve an ideal society. It is the same in environmental aspect. Influential companies have to step up and start taking measures to resolve the carbon emission rate. Being carbon neutral not only can improve greenhouse gas emission, but it can also earn eco-friendly image for the company so more customers are drawn by the positive and caring mindset.

    Best Regards,
    Debbie
