Berytech Presents 8 Lebanese Startups For Change

by Elina Haber | 10-08-2021 06:59 recommendations 0

Greetings from Lebanon! Lebanon has faced major fires in hot weathers for the last two years, this 2021 Kobbayat, a village in the northern country's side was the victim of our mistreatment of Mother Nature. Fire continues in the southern and northern regions as well, slowly being extinguished. Besides, Turkey, and newly Greece which are close to Lebanon are also challenging a devastating amount of fires.. I'm praying for the immediate extinguishing of the devestating wildfires anywhere in the world.
Today, I want to introduce you to an organization that inspires me, it gives me a lot of hopes that I don't have to quit my country for a living, instead this community makes me believe that my home will be the green Lebanon I've always dreamed of. Berytech is that "hero" I'm talking about, with 18 years of experience, they have incorporated more than 300 startups, created more than 3,500 jobs, and they are always supporting the entrepreneurs of Lebanon. This Ecosystem for Entrepreneurs established by the University of Saint Joseph, gained international and national recognition, encouraging the world to innovate in these primary sectors: Agriculture, Water & Waste Water Management, Solid Waste Management, Transportation and Energy. After a year of hard work despite the drastic consequences of the Beirut's port explosion, Berytech succeeded to develop new ideas to preserve nature. On July 27 2021, Berytech organized for the first time the cleanergy innovation day, where they demonstrated 8 Lebanese promising startups for change. Let's have a brief look at Berytech's entrepreneurs' best and newest innovations. (and my favorites)

#1 - BIOWayste
With the help of Berytech, the two entrepreneurs Yasmine Jabali and Reine Metlej, have come up with a solution for organic waste, by creating a device that transforms the daily food wasted into renewable energy, generating biogaz. Not only does it turn waste to treasure but the device ¡°Zerow¡± also produces a 100% natural fertilizer. Thus, this system is now designed for commercial use but will soon be available for households.

#2 - PlastcLab
Did you know? The construction of buildings is often harmful to the environment. This unsustainable architecture uses plywood. It is a wood-based panel products used in construction projects, causing noises, air, water and soil pollution. Ralph Sbeih, the co-founder of PlastcLab has developed a solution for GHGe caused by plywood industry in Lebanon. He collects waste, then transforms it into a recycled sheet. The process is very simple, creating amazing products, friends of the Earth and the market. In fact, a 100% recycled paper sheet is cheaper than a plywood, thus it's a WIN-WIN situation.

#3 - Diwama
You want to sort waste but doubts keep you from recycling it? Christopher Arida is here to make you the environmentally aware hero you always wanted to be. Diwama's team has developed a cool, useful application to guide you in sorting waste. The AI is smart enough to recognize what is recyclable and what is not, recognizing the type of waste and its shape. The social innovators Christopher Arida and Aya Harri, collect the waste from the application users and other sources, and recycle the waste.

#4 - Garbaliser
Hmm.. Every problem has a solution. And the problem Lebanon is facing, is that the country imports 80% of its fertilizers from the outside. Add to that, the inefficiency of those solid chemical materials, both environmentally and financially. Why? Because the manufacturing process of solid fertilizers takes between one and six months, then causes the evaporation of methane. Hanan Ismail and Zeinab Ismail got the agricultores' back, and so far helped 30 farmers improve their production. These two real eco-warriors have recycled household waste and other food wastes to make a 100% eco-friendly and efficient fertilizer. In fact, this organic fertilizer made of natural ingredients, is 50% cheaper than the usual fertilizer, and also boosts the production by 30%.

I'm happy to have shared with you my 4 favorite socio-environmental innovations! Berytech has accelerated many startups in 2021, they are the following: BioWayste, PlastcLab, Diwama, Garbalizer, GoParkly, Hadeer, Nadeera and Reborn. Berytech is a true inspiration and the best go-to for those (including me) who want to be a socio-environmental innovator, and helps them make the change they want to see in the world. :)

    Dear Elina,

This is your mentor Debbie. :)
Out of the start ups you introduced, I am most interested in Diwama. I'm not sure how it is in Lebanon but here in Korea, sorting out waste is a necessary step. When we throw waste, we must put them in the right places. If we have Diwama's product, it would really save our time and work! :D Thanks for an inspiring article.

    Green Cheers,
    Debbie
