In a world where the ecological balance is gravely disturbed, the nurseries are infinitesimal in number. No one can deny the importance of planting trees in order to keep the ecological balance stable. However, BRAC, a non-profit organization came forward with a green initiative that took Bangladesh one step farther in saving the environment. In 1988, BRAC Nursery (previously known as the Social Forestry Programme) started their journey to provide high quality seeds to small and marginal farmers to increase agricultural productivity and farm earnings. The enterprise uses a variety of activities to increase awareness about the necessity of planting trees and to increase the number and variety of trees not only to meet the basic needs such as timber, fuel and fruit but also to restore the ecological balance.
Two-thirds of Bangladesh is less than five meters above sea level. In low-lying plains, intrusion of saltwater, arising from sea level rise, contributed to intensification of food insecurity, unemployed agricultural workers and spread of water-borne diseases. About 2.5 million people experience shortages of drinking water and for water needed for irrigation in the Southwest and Northwestern regions of Bangladesh. Brac¡¯s Climate Change programme addresses climate change impacts using adaptation and mitigation measures through its development initiatives. Their work protects resources, improves quality of life and builds awareness about the environment in rural and urban communities. They provide people with access to the tools and knowledge to adapt and respond to adverse climatic impacts and adopt sustainable practices to combat impending climatic impacts. Their aim is to maintain and improve ecological balance through forestation and contribute towards increasing environmental awareness alongside of generating income and employment. In 2018 BRAC Nursery was awarded the First Prize in the National Tree Plantation and Tree Fair by Bangladesh Forest Department, Ministry of Environment and Forest. So far, they have been the leading Non-profit organization in guarding the environment in Bangladesh. |

Dear Mahsinur,
This is your mentor Debbie. :)
It's great that Bangladesh has this non-profit organization BRAC fighting to save the world. I agree planting trees is really important but in many parts of the world it is often neglected. It would be nice to have one BRAC in each country!
Best,
Debbie
