[Theme of the month] September - Zero Waste

by Joon Mentor | 03-09-2021 00:30 recommendations 0

Greetings, and congratulations to everyone selected as the 27th Eco-generation Regional Ambassadors! This is Joon, and I will be your Mentor with Hannah for next 6 months. The keyword for the first month, September, will be <Zero Waste>.

Even though the title ¡®Zero waste¡¯ might have been named recently, it is not a new concept. In fact, it was not a concept that was ¡®introduced¡¯, but lived along with history of human from ancient world to modern society.

Though Zero waste might seem and sound similar concept as recycling, it covers much broader spectrum. While recycling focuses on reusing materials for economic benefits, Zero waste also focuses on reducing the production of waste on the final stage, which more focuses on environmental problems. Therefore, recycling may be one the means of Zero waste, but it
cannot cover the whole concept.

The movement was popular from 1998 to 2002, but became out of interest for certain period of time. However, due to rise of usage for disposable products, especially after acceleration to
contact-free society caused by COVID-19, many problems emerged. Marine garbage, and microplastic consumption are representing problems, and Zero waste movement is now again
on the center of attention to be one the solutions to such issues.

American Zero waste influencer Bea Johnson introduced a guide line through her book ¡°Zero Waste Home¡± which is popularly known as: 5Rs. Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. The
author claims that people should

1. Refuse using unnecessary products such as receipts, and plastic bags

2. Reduce the amount as much as possible if it is inevitable to use

3. Reuse the product if possible and as much as possible such as reusable bags and tumblers

4. Recycle if it is not reusable, or buy recycled products

5. Use products that Rots, which are bio-degradable

It is not a code of conduct that should be followed, but is widely used among participants of Zero waste movement.

There are no designated ways to approach or forms for the article as long as it covers the keyword <Zero waste>. More research for Zero waste movements, and/or real-life application
might be possible topics, but feel free to reach out to different and creative approaches.

Let¡¯s have meaningful time for next 6 months.

Good Luck
