Continuing with insights on the medicinal properties of the flora of India, here I'm bringing forth a report on orchids. The State flower of Assam, the Ryncostylists retusa (commonly named ‘Fox Tail’), is intrinsically associated with the mosaic of tradition and culture of the state’s diverse ethnic groups. The cultural symbolism of orchids – that have long been a symbol of love and beauty – could be traced to many tropical and subtropical countries where they are found in abundance. In India about 1,300 species (140 genera) are found that form 9% of our flora and are the largest botanical family. Among northeastern states, Arunachal Pradesh alone hosts more than 500 species. The flower is chiefly used as ornamentation on the head by maidens. The demand for orchids like the Ryncostylists retusa would grow during Assamese Bihu festivities. But did you know orchids also have medicinal benefits? There are many species highly valued for their medicinal properties. Traditionally, orchids are used as cure for many diseases and ailments and an important ingredient in herbal remedies. The medicinal properties of orchids were first discovered by the Chinese. They continue to use orchids for medicinal purposes until today, most commonly in the form of medicinal tea. Dried dendrobium is believed to possess medicinal properties that can help treat cancer, strengthen the immune system, and improve eyesight. Pseudobulbs of orchids are sweet, refrigerant, aphrodisiac, febrifuge and tonic and dried pseudo-bulbs are important ingredients of several Ayurvedic preparations. They are believed to be useful in haematemesis, fever, burning sensations, tuberculosis and general debility. Other types of orchids that may possess medicinal properties include Orchis latifolia, Eulophia campestris, Vanda tessellate, and Vanda roxburghii. It is believed that these orchids have certain antibacterial substances and phytochemicals that can help in the treatment of certain illnesses. Well my reason is because I'm actually continuing this series from the last term and also i mentioned this is my application plan, as well as, i always had interest in flowers being an agriculture student.

It's really interesting to know that orchids are grown inside buildings in Korea because we grow them on trees outdoors in my state. I'll try to research more about the orchids grown in Korea because it really fascinated me. And about the medicinal benefits, I'm glad to provide the information to you.

Interesting article about Orchids. There are
also different kinds of orchids in Korea, especially
grown inside the building, so I am quite familiar about it.
However, I did not know that orchids were used
as a medicine. I think it is a wonder of nature. That is also
reason why we should keep the environment as many
different species go extinct before we even understand about them.
