(Thematic Report) Ecofriendly Agricultural Waste Management

Any substance that is discarded after primary use, or defective and of no use is considered as waste. Rapid acceleration of population, urbanization and development, rising living standards are some reasons of accelerating solid waste production. Waste management means the collection, transportation, processing or disposal, managing and monitoring of waste material to minimize its consequences on human and environment.


Agricultural waste is also one of the burning problem of this century. However, as compared to municipal waste management, Agricultural waste has not received attention. Agricultural waste includes crop residue and straw, fruits and vegetables, domestic and livestock waste, used farm implement, agro-industrial processing and chemical residues, cultivation area wastes etc. Therefore, agricultural waste is generated due to production, processing, and storage of crop, livestock, vegetables and fruits, food processing and use and disposal of farm plastic and equipment. Crop production and livestock population are also increasing every year to fulfill the human demand easily. And increasing agricultural production generates more and more Agricultural waste. Although agricultural waste some benefits like economic benefits (sale of straw and dung), composting, crop residues etc.


An eco-friendly Agricultural Waste Management can be said as an advanced and unique path toward sustainability and circular agriculture which falls under one of the approaches of ecofriendly waste management. This approach includes the processes like reduction, collection, reuse, recycling, restoration, recovery and marketing of agriculture waste.


Recently the concept of Agricultural Waste Management i.e. linear take-use-disposal has changes into a circular reduce-collect-separate-reuse-recycle-regulate. This modern approach includes the utilization of the produced waste in biogas production, composting and vermicomposting or their integration, waste treatment with algal cultivation, manure management by livestock fish integration, climate smart agriculture, Cleaner production etc.


Biogas production is the process of producing gas from the anaerobic biomass digestion. Biogas is a clean, efficient and renewable source of energy which can reduce the consumption of non-renewable fuels. Carbon dioxide is the major component in the production of gases from the anaerobic digestion. These Carbon dioxide gases can be utilized by algae cultivation. Algae cultivation is beneficial for the waste treatment. Algae can also be processed into many value added products like bio oil. Some agricultural inputs such as chemical fertilizers, and other chemicals are responsible for declining soil fertility as well as yield reduction on its the long term usage. To replace these fertilizers, composting and vermicomposting are the better alternatives. This gives double benefits i.e. proper utilization of agricultural waste and reduction of the threat of declining soil fertility. The dead animals, excreta of animals and plant residues can easily be recycled via composting. Vermicomposting adds  important nutrients such as N,K,P present in the organic waste and also act as plant growth regulators. It is a good source of protein for animal. Hence, it can replace the application of fertilizer. This can reduce the residual waste of chemical fertilizers and other chemical. Another way for the waste management is integration of livestock with fish. The source of nutrient can be recycled through the integrating farming. These are some of the methods for ecofriendly agriculture waste management.

    Well read the introduction and examples of ecofriendly agricultural waste management!
    Biogas production, algae cultivation, composting, and etc... could be outstanding examples.
    Linear take-use-disposal seems to be an interesting topic, can you explain more about it?

    I agree with your point that agricultural wastes are not receiving much attentions
    as other wastes such as solid wastes. It is also an important issue in rural areas
    as inappropriately dealing with these wastes may lead to contamination or pollution
    on groundwaters used for farming. It may spread water-borne diseases such as
    cholera. Though it can be serious, the bright side of this issue is that, for most of
    the times, such wastes are easily biodegradable. Using this characteristics, people
    have started using these wastes as a fuel for biogas generation as you have mentioned
    in your article. There will be much more ways to use such wastes. Why don't you
    look for such examples? It can be agriculture, but don't restrain yourself and reach
    out to different fields.
