[Thematic Report] Eco-friendly Waste Management |

We are all aware of the topic "waste management". In the simpler terms, we can define it as the collection, transportation, and disposal of garbage, sewage, and other waste products. The process of waste management involves treating solid and liquid waste. Sanitary landfills are the ultimate means of disposal for unutilised municipal solid waste from waste processing facilities and other types of inorganic waste that cannot be reused or recycled. We can start using many techniques right at home- reduction and reuse, which works to reduce the amount of disposable material used. In some urban centres, people are working in the informal sector to collect solid waste for each doorstep and get a collection fee and derive additional income from sale of recyclables. However, there has been technological advancement for processing, treatment and disposal of solid waste. Installation of waste-to-compost and bio-methanation plants would reduce the load of landfill sites. The biodegradable component of India¡¯s solid waste is currently estimated at a little over 50 per cent. Bio-methanation is a solution for processing biodegradable waste which is also remains underexploited. What can we do? *Around 100 cities are set to be developed as smart cities. Civic bodies should reinvent garbage management in cities so that we can process waste and not landfill it. *For this, all the households and institutions must segregate their waste at source so that it could be managed as a resource. *For processing of organic waste, compost pits should be constructed in every locality. *We can bear efficient waste management only if there's community participation, not just individuals. Hello Dalima, this is your mentor Hannah. Sorry for the late comment!
You've mentioned composting and bio-methanation for eco-friendly waste management.
There are additional ways that are being proposed but they will need infrastructure and investment for it.
Thank you for your great article and please keep up with your wonderful work :)
Sincerly,
Hannah

Hello Dalima, this is your mentor Joon.
Yes, Waste management could be divided into steps that you have listed on the article, but not always limited to it. Different approaches are being made, which means different steps are adding up to conventional waste management system. Some are showing its effectiveness and officially added to a society's official methodology to process the waste.
More of these should be implemented and keep our environment less impacted by us.
Well read your article, and let's keep up.
Best,
Joon
