Eco-friendly waste management(thematic report)

by Roselyne Awiti | 24-10-2021 05:06 recommendations 0

This refers to a means of creating less damage to nature.Reduction of wastes and the genuine care for our environment has undoubtedly enabled us make a great step towards ensuring an eco friendly way of waste management. Recently, I witnessed a wedding where everything was edible including spoons, forks, plates among others. This has replaced  plastic cutleries which are always disposed and what they do is create an unhealthy environment. That is just an example of  the kind of wastes which can be avoided. However, In as much as  some wastes are avoidable, there exists others  which are non avoidable and this makes it integral for us to invent the eco-friendly ways to manage such wastes so as to ensure a clean and safe environment for all of us. I'm talking of wastes remaining after implementing the 4Rs(reduce,reuse, rot and refuse). So how can this form of waste management be achieved?

To begin with, in my country, a group of youths took it as their sole responsibility to enforce eco-friendly E-waste management by collecting such wastes from the streets, taking them to recycling companies and they consequently earn their living through this act. This has not only ensured minimized E-waste pollution and an eco friendly management but it has also changed the way people dispose off such wastes taking into account its monetary value. You can watch this video to see how they successfully do this https://youtu.be/ITNhMD_CHPQ(video courtesy of Citizen Tv Kenya).

Secondly, other than the 5Rs which seemingly take the lead when it comes to eco-friendly waste management, energy production is among the methods which can be used to achieve this. Here, wastes such as vegetable(food) and animal remains can be used to produce biogas for cooking in our homes. Additionally, if there is excess wastes produced in a day or such wastes are produced in large scale, then it's recommended that one should start up a biogas plant to make this method a success.
Thirdly, compositing of wastes and proper disposal of hazardous wastes such as chemicals is also very important in achieving this.

Hello Roselyne, this is your mentor Joon.

Well defined the meaning of eco-friendly waste management! It is similar to Zero waste, but different as it thinks about environment during the process of waste management. It was interesting to hear that there were group of people, not organizations or government, that are playing a role to enforce eco-friendly E-waste management. Though they are doing it as they could make money from it, that does not change that they are contributing as a good impact on environment. If you are interested in other types of waste managements, look up for incineration in extreme high temperature.

    Well read your article,

    Best,

    Joon
