How Individuals Can Contribute to Carbon Neutrality.

by Vivian Nabisere | 23-01-2022 00:16 recommendations 1

Carbon neutral activities are those aimed at achieving net zero anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons through balancing a measured amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered.

They involve reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating those already in the atmosphere in order to slow their effects.

The greenhouse gases emitted have adverse effects such as global warming (IPCC,2018). Below are some carbon neutral efforts that can be done individually.

1. Switching to low-carbon energy technologies.
Shifting to renewable sources of energy that have a minimum carbon footprint such as solar electricity where possible in day-to-day activities reduces carbon output to the atmosphere.

2. Energy conservation
Saving energy lowers costs and reduces reliance on fossil fuels, whose use would result in high levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Examples of energy conservation practices include: green computing, turning off lights in an unoccupied room, unplugging unused appliances and using energy efficient appliances.

3. Planting trees

Trees sequester a significant amount of atmospheric carbon by fixing it during photosynthesis, thereby reducing atmospheric carbon.

All in all, Individual action is only effective if it is collective. Therefore, we are all encouraged to spread word on the Climate Crisis and positive action to those within our communicative reach, such that timely carbon neutrality is achieved.

Hello Vivian, this is your mentor Joon.

What can we do? What should we do? Not many people think about it themselves, and blame government officials for not taking any actions. No matter which group is responsible for current condition, Individual actions are crucial to alleviate it. We may be able to reduce carbon emission by the means you have mentioned in your report, but no limited to such. It would be nice to look for more possible solutions and write it on free report.

Well read your article, and let's keep up.

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Vivian, this is your mentor Hannah.

Great introduction of how individuals could act on carbon neutrality.
I think that those individual actions you've mentioned sums up to make a big difference.
Reducing carbon release in our daily lives as in your first and second efforts seems essential to me.

Thank you for your great article and please keep up with your wonderful work :)

    Sincerly,
    Hannah
