[February Free Report] Implications of Russia-Ukraine Crisis on Environment

by Pranav Gaba | 25-02-2022 01:41 recommendations 0

Russian President's Vladimir Putin's call to invade Ukraine on Thursday has now sparked various concerns of a full-blown war and has shook world leaders and international peace off their core. The events have already started impacting the world economy and claiming innocent lives.

Ukraine and Russia have had stained relations for a long time and serious problems started emerging between the two countries beginning from the year 2014.

Although Ukraine occupies only 6% of the area in Europe, the tiny country possesses 35% of the continent's biodiversity. Earlier, the Chernobyl disaster wounded Ukraine in 1986 and left deep scars on the country's environment which can even be seen today. One-tenth of Ukraine's land area was affected by the radiation and even today, Ukraine releases polluted water and heavy metals into the Black Sea. Any kind of war will disrupt landscapes - terrestrial and marine habitats - and create air, soil and water pollution from the use of weapons, air crafts and other destructive explosives that are hazardous to the environment. Such has always been the case be it World War I or II. For instance, the bombardment of cities and the destruction of forests, farms and irrigation systems during World War II produced devastating environmental consequences, and by the end of the war there were almost 5 crore refugees  and displaced people.

Conventional weapons also cause enough damage, especially in places where they are disposed of through open burning or detonation. High-intensity conflicts also require and  consume vast quantities of fuel, leading to massive CO2 emissions and contributing to climate change.

In some cases, where displaced people move may go under pressure, such as herders moving their livestock through sensitive ecosystems. Large-scale refugee movements can also create trans boundary environmental impact.

Hello Pranav, this is your mentor Joon.

It is quite surprising statistic that 6% is responsible, and home for 35% of Europe's biodiversity. It might be because the environment and nature is well preserved and makes me worry that war could harm the preserved state of nature. Hope it does not destroy environment any further. I also hope the war to stopped as soon as possible.

Well read your article, and let's keep up.

    Best,

    Joon
