Thematic Report: Water Pollution, from Vessels to the Heart: Nakivubo Channel, Uganda.

Water Pollution, from Vessels to the Heart: Nakivubo Channel, Uganda.

According to the Environmental Pollution Center, Water pollution is the presence in groundwater of toxic chemicals and biological agents that exceed what is naturally found in the water and may pose a threat to human health and the environment.

Lake Victoria, Uganda, the largest lake in Africa, faces numerous environmental issues including water pollution and its subsequent problems like biodiversity and habitat loss. Its water pollutants come from different sources, one of which is the Nakivubo channel.

Nakivubo channel is a storm water channel that starts at the foothills of Makerere hill and passes through Makerere Kivulu slum, to three busy markets and to the Kampala Industrial Area and then discharges its water at Murchison Bay in Lake Victoria, Uganda.

In Makerere Kivulu slum, pit latrines are emptied in the channel. The human excreta introduced in the channel highly contaminates the water which causes air pollution and a high risk of waterborne diseases to surrounding communities.

Plastic waste and other kinds of garbage are dumped in the channel that causes blockage and stagnation of water, which further creates a breeding site for disease-causing vectors like mosquitoes.

During the rainy season, runoff from the slum, markets and industrial areas adds heavy metals, nitrogen, chemical waste and other pollutants to the channel water, increasing it's toxicity.

Consequently, Lake Victoria has become suffocated by plastic, garbage, chemicals and their toxicity. All these cause the lake's equivalent of a slow death, that is evident in fish kills and poor water quality.

Water pollution in Uganda is also a major problem in Peru.
Water is an element of nature, an integral part of natural ecosystems, fundamental for the sustenance and reproduction of life on the planet since it is an indispensable factor for the development of biological processes.
It is gratifying that I am not the only young woman concerned about this problem that unites us.

    Amazing article, Vivian :D

Hi Vivian, this is your mentor Joon.

Such situation should not be continued unless there is alternative source of water. It does not mean it is encouraged to contaminate one water source, but it is to avoid the worst situation. Mentioned conditions would create serious problems, such as outbreak of waterborne diseases including cholera and typhoid. Yet, the first thing people should do is to look for possible solution to enhance current condition. Adequate filter is required and maintenance system should be installed.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Vivian, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Lake Victoria really needs to find methods to cope with the situation. I personally think heavy metal substances are the most dangerous among various pollutants. It can destroy the lake, the species that live in there and the surrounding communities. In my country, South Korea, about 15 years ago, we had a terrible event where a lot of phenol was discharged into the lake. Not only was the lake destroyed, but also the surrounding farmlands. I hope this will not happen in Lake Victoria.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon
