The planet keeps nudging us with increasingly extreme droughts, reminding us that water is life. It is an essential resource upon which all living beings depend and it is crucial to all social and economic development, as well as energy production and adaptation to climate change. Nevertheless, we are now facing a gigantic challenge.
GREAT PACIFIC GARBAGE PATCH The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a collection of marine debris in the North Pacific Ocean. Marine debris is litter that ends up in oceans, seas and bays. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is not the only marine trash patch, but it is the biggest. It spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan. The patch is actually made up of two parts: the Western Garbage Patch, located near Japan, and the Eastern Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. The entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch is bounded by the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. A gyre is a large system of swirling ocean currents. The area in the center of a gyre tends to be very calm and stable. The circular motion of the gyre draws debris into this stable center, where it becomes trapped. MARINE LIFE From the perspective of a land animal like us, the ocean can be a harsh environment. However, marine life are adapted to live in the ocean. But they aren't really adapted to live in an ocean that's filled with plastic. We have changed the oceans with all the plastic deposited into them. Every year, around 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enters our seas. Every minute, in fact, one refuse truckload of plastic is dumped in our oceans. If these rates continue, experts predict that by 2050 there will be more plastic in our seas than fish. The most visible impacts of plastic debris are the ingestion, suffocation and entanglement of hundreds of marine species. Marine wildlife such as seabirds, whales, fish and turtles mistake plastic waste for prey; most then die of starvation as their stomachs become filled with plastic. CAUSES OF WATER POLLLUTION A few causes of water pollution are- Oil Spills- Large oil spills and oil leaks, while often accidental, are a major cause of water pollution. Leaks and spills often are caused by oil drilling operations in the ocean or ships that transport oil Industrial Waste- Industrial waste from agricultural sites, mines and manufacturing plants can make its way into rivers, streams and other bodies of water that lead directly to the sea. The toxic chemicals in the waste produced by these industries not only have the potential to make water unsafe for human consumption, they can also cause the temperature in freshwater systems to change, making them dangerous for many water dwelling organisms. Burning Of Fossil Fuels- Carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels accumulates in the atmosphere, where it causes global warming. But it also affects our oceans. As carbon dioxide enters the ocean, it reacts with sea water to form carbonic acid. Fertilizers And Pesticides- When these substances seep into the groundwater, they can harm animals, plants and humans |

Hello Razeen, this is your mentor Chelwoon.
Although I have seen a lot of photos of the great pacific garbage patch, I still cannot get used to it. I cannot believe how severe the situation is. We cannot see this huge garbage patch on the map, but we know that it exists and it continues to grow. A large amount of water pollutants comes from many industries. This is why our governments should regulate, monitor and penalize if necessary these industries for polluting the environment continuously.
Thank you for the article!

Chelwoon

Hello Razeen, this is your mentor Joon.
Marine pollution is one of the types of water pollution. Great pacific garbage patch is the most infamous examples. Different marine lives are getting harmed by the patch. Sources of waste are various and cannot be estimated. Such sources include those mentioned in your article. Oil spills could lead to tremendous catastrophe, industrial wastes are constant sources of pollution, using fossil fuels, fertilizers, and pesticides also affect water a lot. What are some ways we could reduce such problems? Have some time to think about it.
Well read your article, and let's keep up!
Best,
Joon

Hello Razeen ,
I hope you are doing great .The pictures shared are really made me sad. Water pollution has effected marine life adversely as seen in the pictures.
Keep on sharing such report!
Thank you for sharing!
