Reduce artificial lights; see the real lights!

What is light pollution?

When we think about pollution, we all get to hear about water, air, and soil pollution.  These are some of the biggest titles that we talk about.  But, did you know that light can also be pollutant?  The inappropriate use of artificial light is known as light pollution.  This can effect both humans and animals, and also our climate.  Light pollution includes: Glare, Sky glow, Light trespass and Clutter.

How does light pollution affect Humans and Animals?

Sky glow, which is brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas, is the main way that effects humans.

A science research shows that light pollution disturbs animals who live near urban areas.  There have also been changes of migration patterns of birds and turtles due to the artificial lights in cities.  As we know, insects are attracted to light, and they die because of the heat.  This also causes distress in birds in cities, as they tend to start their daily activities before the ones who live in village areas.

This also causes astrologists to miss the beauty of the night sky and it limits their ability to view celestial objects.

How can we stop this?

Like other pollutants, it is not so hard to make this right.  Minimizing light pollution is really easy; you can simply start by minimizing the light from your home and only use light when needed.  We can install motion detector and timers to street lamps, and properly shield them so that the light won¡¯t spread.  Let¡¯s follow this simple steps and restore the beauty of the night sky once again.

Hello Seyra, this is your mentor Joon.

Light is a pollutant which people usually dismisses. In fact, people do not tend to accept light pollution as a serious matter. Yet, studies have shown people living in urban area, which they are much more likely to get affected by light pollution, has higher level of sleeping problems and this directly leads to health. It is much more worse for animals. However, there are not much measures we could take to restrict it. Thanks to some considerate designers, we can see some products which disperse the light. People should be much more conscious on different kinds of pollutions.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Seyara, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

In some countries, one can easily find many hotels in cities, overlooking some buildings and a mixture of red and golden lights on the cars. Sometimes, it looks comfortable and even romantic. However, we cannot overlook the adverse effects of this light pollution. Apart from what you have mentioned, we have one more reason why people should minimize light pollution. Which is the Energy Consumption. Turning the unnecessary lights off is what we can do in our daily life. I hope that one day we could live in a world where we can see the bright thousands of stars in the sky instead of the artificial lights in cities.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon
