Just like the famous line,'water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink', in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem, 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', water is around us most of the time but is often not clean or safe enough to drink. What is the cause behind it? It's only one - water pollution.
What is water pollution? Water pollution can be defined as the contamination of a stream, river, lake, ocean, or any other water body, degrading water quality and making it toxic for humans & environment in general. Water pollution can be of two types - organic and chemical. I. Organic water pollution- This is the pollution caused by bacteria and other microorganisms present in the water, and other animal wastes. II. Chemical pollution- This is generated by the nitrates and phosphates of pesticides, human and animal drugs, heavy metals, acids and hydrocarbons used in industries. Causes and effects of water pollution Unsurprisingly, human activity is primarily responsible for water pollution, even if natural phenomenon - such as landslides and floods - can also contribute to degrade the water quality. Some of the major causes of water pollution are as follows:- I. Improper treatment of sewage - Inadequate sewage collection and treatment are sources of water pollution. According to the United Nations, more than 80% of the worldwide wastewater goes back in the environment without being treated or reused. II. Industries - Industries produce a lot of waste containing toxic chemicals and pollutants. A huge amount of the industrial waste is drained in the fresh water which then flows into canals, rivers and eventually in the sea. Another source of water pollution is the burning of fossil fuels, causing air pollution like acid rain which then flows to streams, lakes, and other stretches of water. III. Garbage dump - Everyday, garbage such as plastic, paper, aluminum, food, glass, or rubber are deposited into the sea. These items take weeks to hundreds of years to decompose, and thus they are a major cause for water pollution. IV. Radioactive wastes - Generated - among others - by power plants and uranium mining, radioactive waste can linger in the environment for thousands of years. When these substances are released accidentally or disposed improperly, they threaten groundwater, surface water, as well as marine resources. How to prevent water pollution I. Wastewater treatment - Wastewater treatment consists of removing pollutants from wastewater through a physical, chemical or biological process. The more efficient these processes are, the cleaner the water becomes. II. Reducing the use of plastic - 80% of plastic in our oceans is from land sources. In order to reduce the amount of plastic entering our ocean, we need to both reduce our use of plastic globally, and to improve plastic waste management. III. Water conservation - Without water conservation, we won¡¯t go very far. It is central in making sure the world has better access to clean water. It means being aware that water is a scarce resource, taking care of it accordingly, and managing it responsibly. |

Hello Pranav, this is your mentor Chelwoon.
This article shows that you have a clear understanding of water pollution! There are various causes and effects of water pollution. Almost half of the people in the world are facing water scarcity due to unbalanced distribution and global level-water pollution. I think ¡°Wastewater Treatment¡±, which is your first way to prevent water pollution, is the most important one. Hopefully, All the people around the world have sufficient drinkable water without no worries.
Thank you for the article!
Regards,
Chelwoon

Hello Pranav, this is your mentor Joon.
There are different causes of water pollution which are cause by, but not limited to, the sources mentioned in your article. The solution is clear: to purify water before releasing and not dump wastes to fresh water. No matter how clear the solution is, it is not being treated the way it should be. It would probably because of the short-term cost as no additional purification process is required. However, looking at the problems in long-term, we should regulate those not following the proper measure. Hope we could live in future with clean water.
Well read your article, and let's keep up!
Best,
Joon
