This is your mentor Joon and I am writing this article to announce the Theme of the Month for April succeeding March¡¯s topic, ¡®Water Pollution¡¯. The keyword for the second month will be <Soil Pollution>. Through the process of researching Water Pollution, some ambassadors have noticed that Water Pollution is closely related to other kinds of pollutions. Soil Pollution is the one closely related to Water Pollution and Ambassadors will know have chances to investigate about its correlation. For instance, Groundwater Pollution is a kind of water pollution which negatively affects fresh water streams. Reasons behind ground water pollution is straight forward. Once wastes, sufficiently decomposed, on top of the ground or underground landfills gets wet due to rain, it releases chemical substances which becomes a pollutant. If it is absorbed into the soil it would naturally flow to ground water. As ground water is connected to fresh water streams, it could cause pollutions on river and oceans also. If the chemical substances contains enough toxicity, it would harm those who consumed the water without proper filtering. If proper ground work was done, such as applying cements with sufficient deepness, we could prevent such incident from happening. Yet, Soil Pollution is not only related with Water Pollution. It could be related with other pollutions, and cause various consequences. Air pollution could be an another example. Ambassadors could look for relationships between Soil Pollution and others to write their articles. However, do not limit yourself from taking different approaches. One could research about possible, direct to be more precise, effects of Soil Pollution on different matters such as agriculture, ecosystem, and so on. Another could research about possible ways to reduce soil pollutions. There are much more causes and consequences of Soil Pollution. Soil Erosion could be another example. Soil Erosion is a state which the fertile layer of soil is lost. It is caused by, but not limited to, overgrazing, deforestation, and Soil Pollution caused by excess usage of pesticides. Another suggestion is to trace how soil pollution could affect human health. One may trace the track starting from the origin including gathering process of soil, mid-level stages including how crops or domesticated animals are affected, and final stage, human consumption and mechanism of how it affects human health. Above are just simple suggestions which ambassadors could refer to. You can use the topic I have suggested or come up with your own. Recommended amount for an article is more than 3 paragraphs, and please cite the sources you have used if there are any references used. You can refer to following links for brief information: https://www.unep.org/resources/report/global-assessment-soil-pollution https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/soil-pollution-risk-our-health-and-food-security https://reliefweb.int/report/world/soil-pollution-hidden-reality But feel free to refer to other sources as above is just a suggestion of possible source. It was exciting to read articles of our new ambassadors! Every single one of them gave me new insights and some food for thoughts. Hope everyone take a look on other ambassador¡¯s articles and leave some comments on how you thought about it. Let¡¯s keep up! |
