28th Ambassadorship, Month 2, Report 2 Month: April Free report Topic: Effects of Plastic Pollution Plastic pollution is a serious problem that we are all aware of. Although plastic has its numerous advantages – low cost, ease of manufacture, flexibility, and accessibility – it is becoming increasingly evident that plastic garbage is out of control and wreaking havoc on the environment. It has been found that every year, 12 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean, and microplastics have just been identified deep below the Arctic ice by scientists. In simple words, plastic pollution is irrational use of synthetic plastic items in the environment that causes difficulties for wildlife habitats, ecosystems, and human populations. Let us discuss on how plastic garbage is harming the environment. Plastic pollution keeps the food chain into disarray. This can happen in a variety of ways, but one significant example is animals consuming plastics, which then gets transferred down the food chain and harms the animals' health. Moreover, it has the potential to be harmful to human health. Because we're consuming harmful compounds, plastics seeping into our food supply can have a bad impact on our health. In addition to that, our water supply may be harmed by groundwater pollution. Plastics in our water supplies can produce a slew of dangerous pollutants, which then find their way back into our bodies. Not only humans, Animals are also harmed by it. Plastic can damage or even kill animals, in addition to being toxic to humans. Land animals suffocate in plastic bags, and marine species are frequently caught in nets. Plastic pollutes the land, air, and water. Plastic pollutes the environment in many ways — we've already discussed land and water pollution. The main problem is that clearing areas of plastic waste is time-consuming and costly. The amount of plastic waste in the globe is so large that getting rid of it is extremely difficult and expensive. So, these are some effects of plastic pollution. I would like to hear from you guys about ways to minimize this problem. Thank you!

I am awed by all the information; even though people use plastic in enormous quantities, we do not realize all the harmful side effects to the climate ! Thank you for the good information!

Hello Alok, this is your mentor Chelwoon.
Plastic has various advantages. It is used in many different forms and can be adapted to different purposes. This is the reason why we can easily find products or goods that are made of plastic everywhere. To be honest, it is almost impossible to live without plastic. However, we strive to reduce the use of plastic and to research better ways to reuse it continuously. If plastic waste is dumped into the ground, it will stay underground for a very long time before they completely decompose. Meanwhile, they will cause adverse effects on the environment such as soil pollution. We should keep in mind the fact that animals are also affected by the plastic pollution.
Thank you for the article!

Chelwoon

Hello Alok, this is your mentor Joon.
Plastic used to be a material gaining spotlight when it was first introduced. It was distributed world wide, and used tremendously. However, we started concentrating on its side effect only on recent days. We could find microplastics on every moving organism which requires consumption to survive including the krill which is on the lowest bottom of the food cycle. Now is the time which we have to work on to deal with the problem. Luckily, there are studies which showed some possibilities of breaking down plastics with specific enzymes, but we have far more to go. Hope we could find the perfect remedy to the problem.
Well read your article, and let's keep up!
Best,
Joon
