Earth day 2022: A letter from Earth to Humanity

Earth day 2022: A letter from Earth to Humanity

Dear Human race,
The caretakers of my body.

Greetings from the waters, forests, land and air. I write to you to inform you the miserable circumstances that I find myself in as a result of your negligence.

Let me tell you a story: Once upon a time, a monkey celebrated and was permissive about the death of a farmer that tills the banana garden from which it gets food. Though the farmer was dead and could no longer chase the monkey from his garden, the garden never flourished anymore without the farmer's nourishing care and overtime, the monkey lacked food.

You too, are like the monkey.

By choosing possessions and financial prosperity, you have abandoned me, the mouth that feeds you, to the deterioration you have caused.

My waters: rotten and rusty with garbage and plastic, and toxic industrial effluent from your homes and industries respectively.

My amosphere: brimming with smog, smoke and greenhouse gases from the your automobiles and industrial outlets.

The forests: that previously glowed from above, like endless green skies, gone with the storm of industrialization and high population density.

The species that find a habitat in these places are being left foodless and homeless for example: the plastics found in the untreated effluent released into the sea causes the decay of coral reefs and they are destroyed and unable to act as hiding places for prey fish from predators in water.

Instead of the caretakers you were created to be, you have become wreckers.
Today, I hardly remember days when the land, rivers and the seas were as biodiverse as grains of sand. Many species are becoming endangered and some extinct, at an increasing rate because of your actions. All the changes in me are going to affect you now and in the coming times: Today, we can already see this in the extreme weather events like floods, droughts that cause destruction of both human life and property.

You must wake up humans!! Only you can minimize this change and adapt to it.

Stand to invest in the conservation and promotion of green economic policies, attitudes and economies because they are the way to this.

Furthermore, offer meaningful effort in recycling, reuse and reduce on the plastics.

Engage in planting of trees for both land restoration and for sequestration of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas.

Kindly invest in scientific research that explores unearthing of more information about this changing world and the creative solutions to it.

I hope you heed my plea.

Yours Sorrowfully and Sincerely,
Earth 2022.

Hello Vivian, this is your mentor Joon.

We are celebrating 53rd earth day in 2022. Huge progress has been made since, but we still have far more to go. Recycling, reusing, upcycling and so on. Tons of '-ing' should be done daily to make it '-ed' a past tense. Perhaps, we might not be able to make them past tense as it might be continued all along if we do not find alternative waste management system, and ways to deal with environmental problems. Hope we could progress and lot more changes could be made in 54th earth day.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Vivian, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

I read this article three times in a row. Although I am not sure why I read this article a few times, but it highlights the importance of what we are facing. The degradation of the environment is mainly caused by human activities. No one can counter this argument. We are the ones who have destroyed our habitats like the monkey did. We must take immediate steps to make the change before it is too late. Great analogy!

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon
