Greetings 28th Eco-generational Regional Ambassadors! This is your mentor Joon and I am writing this article to announce the Themes of the Month for May succeeding April¡¯s topic, ¡®Soil Pollution¡¯. The keyword for the third month will be <Biodiversity>.

Through the process of researching through different pollutions including soil and water pollution, ambassadors would have noticed the seriousness of current state. We are rapidly heading towards the critical point which we cannot make up for what we have done. If we overlook the seriousness, the only end we would face would be some massive scale extinction. Even in this moment, different lives are vanishing and it is accelerating more and more.

According to International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN), out of hundred thousand of sample species, around thirty two thousand species are currently on the risk of extinction. Also according to World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) during the period of 1970 to 2016, over 68% of animal species have gone extinct. Especially in Latin American, and Caribbean region, more than 94% of species have vanished and cannot be seen anymore in this world.

Looking through above statistics, most of people would now notice the seriousness of current state. Extinction shows anti-proportional relationship with biodiversity in the world. Which means since the beginning of the last century, biodiversity of the earth has continuously decreased. Though some people might underestimate the consequences of the phenomena, it cannot be neglected. Everything is interconnected and interrelated with cycle. I am quite certain that most of you have heard about food cycle or pyramid. It is an easy and popular concept which could be easily googled. As we are currently on the top of food pyramid, we still have much to produce alternatively. However, for those on the bottom of pyramid, their choices are limited. Once the specie below their food pyramid goes extinct, they do not have alternative to consume leading to extinction of the specific species. Then, the whole cycle would eventually lead to collapse.

Extinction issue is also related to reproduction of different species. Plants usually depend on animals to reproduce their seeds on specific animals using different means. For instance, dandelion reproduce its offspring using fury animals as the medium of transportation. As fury animals have tendency to head to north, some regions, which the average temperature increased, have problems on reproducing dandelion species.

Once again, everything is interrelated. Climate change, global warming, disruption of food cycle, and so on. Though we do not know the consequences of extinction of a certain species, what we are sure is it will going to return to us.

Mission for our ambassadors is to research about themes related to biodiversity. It could be analyzed, altered in any form to show your understandings. It could be in any form such as tabloid, poster, card news, essay as long as it is related to the topic. If you have hard times looking up for sources, refer to following links:

https://www.un.org/en/observances/biological-diversity-day

https://www.worldwildlife.org/pages/what-is-biodiversity#:~:text=Biodiversity%20is%20all%20the%20different,maintain%20balance%20and%20support%20life.

But feel free to refer to other sources as above is just a suggestion of possible source.

Every May 22nd is the International Day for Biological Diversity. By writing articles, I wish our ambassadors could get some awareness about the issue, and get some chances to share your thoughts to our community.

 Let¡¯s keep up!
