Biodiversity Loss in Africa

by HASSAN ABUBAKAR MUHAMMAD | 22-05-2022 18:03 recommendations 0

Africa is home to a remarkable animals, plants, and marine biodiversity.
The continent is rich in tropical forests, wetlands, deserts, savannah, and montane grasslands; providing critical ecosystem services and serving as buffers to climate change.

For example, mangrove swamps protect coastal societies in East Africa from cyclones and tsunamis, while serving as homes for various species of flora and fauna, and a source of income for the local people.

However, the continent is experiencing a dramatic loss of biodiversity.
Agricultural and other human expansion on land, and in the sea, overexploitation of wildlife, are some of the drivers for biodiversity loss, and so is climate change and pollution.

Scientists have warned that by 2100, climate change alone could causd the loss of over half of mammal and bird species and triggers 10-30% decline in lake productivity.

THIS IS THE TIME TO NOT ONLY TALK, BUT WORK TOGETHER, FOR OURSELVES AND OUR FUTURE.

Hello Hassan, this is your mentor Joon.

Africa plays an important role regarding biodiversity throughout history. As far as we know, if Africa was not rich of biodiversity, human specie would not have been able to exist. However, due to climate change and temperature rise, Africa was a first target to get damaged from it. Rivers, which was a source of water, are drying up, and showing its surface, wildfires are outbreaking, and there are far more problems going on. Moreover, artificial reasons add up to the problem. Poaching of animals could be an example. Poaching has finally made white rhino go extinct from this world. No matter how much we set up the rules, it is of no use if we do not enforce it. We should act and talk.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon

Hello Hassan, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Thank you for sharing stories from Africa! I had been waiting for content related to biodiversity of Africa, because in many countries, Africa is well known for their biodiversity. Except for the causes you have mentioned in this article, I want to say one more big cause negatively affecting the biodiversity. Many rivers in Africa which are amazingly rich in biodiversity are suffering from the effects of unregulated mining practices. I hope we will seek resolution to cope with the rapid increase in demand for minerals such as Nickel.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

I agree with you!, there is evidence of what is happening to our planet but we tend to take it as if they were simple figures or numbers. However, we must raise awareness and make an introspection on how we as young citizens can contribute.
