[Thematic Report for June] What is the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI)? |

We are always told that climate change and global warming is a serious issue. However, do we ever stop and think about whether there are solutions being implemented? Amongst many actions being taken, a notable one is the Green Certification Programs. This system of certification programs exists to differentiate and recognize producers and companies that have an eco-friendly vision. One of the many programs is the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI). This certificate was created to protect certain standards of animal husbandry in farming. Just as humans have a huge impact on the environment, so do animals. When it comes to human interference, managing animal husbandry-the act of selecting and breeding animals for agricultural purposes-is particularly crucial. AWI aims to enforce breeding methods and techniques that result in the least pollution possible. For instance, some of the standards that the Animal Welfare Approved program, one of the programs regulated under AWI, enforce that the livestock have essential access to outdoors so that they behave naturally (e.g. ducks must be able to swim in water). These standards are enforced in order to protect not only the physical, but also the mental health of the animals. Because animals have a huge impact on our environment as well, it is important that certificate programs like AWI are being acknowledged and sought. Hello Seojin, this is your mentor Chelwoon.
Interesting green certification program! Environmental impacts from animal husbandry are often neglected, for example, the extent in which it impacts. Not only does it impact the environment, but also animal rights should be handled with great care. I cannot say what is right between, becoming a vegetarian or enjoying meat, but I am sure that animal welfare should also be considered.
Thank you for the article!
Regards,
Chelwoon

Hello Seojin, this is your mentor Joon.
Interesting certification program! I have actually seen some products with the certification of "Animal Welfare" in Korea, whether or not it is from the institute you have mentioned in are article or not. I have heard different farms put the cattle out to pasture in order to increase the welfare of cattle. I am not sure whether such programs are actually environmentally friendly, but one thing is sure: at least animals which are grown on such farms are happy before they are slaughtered.
Well read your article, and let's keep up!
Best,
Joon
