[THEMATIC REPORT] SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION ACTIVITIES OF CORPORATIONS

by IMMANUEL MWENDWA KIILU | 11-08-2022 18:19 recommendations 2

Over the years, developing countries have seen to it that water bottle companies have grown into existence since the use of bottles has been made a necessity in our day-to-day lives. Plastic bottles are disposed of poorly all over the world with little or no consideration for the pollution of the environment. Many oceans and beaches have been made disposal points as they are filled with bottles from different water and soft drink companies. Plastic bottles are degradable and not biodegradable which brings about the issue of pollution of the environment. This is because plastic bottles cannot be recycled by living organisms and what happens is the intensity of the sun¡¯s energy and different environmental factors such as rain continues to degrade the plastic bottles down into smaller pieces known as microplastics that eventually remain on earth. This process could easily take up to almost a thousand years to degrade a single plastic bottle. Throughout this degrading process, the plastics release toxic chemicals into the environment that shall in turn harm the existence of biodiversity in the future. Its production has also its lower side as it requires non-renewable fossil fuels such as oil to enable its manufacturing. Concerning aquatic animals, most plastic ends up in the ocean even after it has been disposed of on land, this poses a great threat to animals as it clogs up their digestive system once consumed, leading to death.

Coca-Cola, a soft drink company, has been at the forefront in the manufacturing of plastic bottles to package their soft drinks. This presumably brings in their assumption that they care less about the environment as they have a massive number of plastic bottles all over the world that are poorly recycled.  Plastic bottles have been noted to be the fifth most commonly found trash item in the coastline cleanups by quantity and a number of them are Coca-Cola soft drink bottles.  This speaks towards a corporation that cares more about its business entity and growing its profit other than caring for the already deteriorating environment.

However, this is not the case as Coca-Cola Company has been at the forefront to ensure that it catered for climate justice through the initiative ¡®Arwa price of water.¡¯  Water scarcity has been a global issue as it is a scarce resource and most people have been misusing it as if it has no value.  The refugees in the Middle East who are affected by climate changes and a lack of peace in their communities can get clean water as a result of a partnership between Arwa and the Coca-Cola Company which has done so since 2014.  This has been an initiative that has asked people to pay for water what they feel it¡¯s worth and on average people were able to pay nine times for a bottle of Arwa water allowing for the donation of 200,000 liters of clean water and the installment of two water filtration systems in Syrian refugee camps consequently helping people in different parts of the world to realize the true value of water by removing the prize altogether. In funding this initiative, Coca-Cola has shown its care towards the environment and climate action as opposed to the assumption that the world holds. This proves that corporations are well vested in providing social contributions geared towards climate justice.

Hello Immanuel, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Interesting article! If one companies?? business will lead to bad environmental impacts, they should come up with a solution to alleviate them. Plastic pollution is one of the modern day??s biggest environmental issues. I hope Coca-cola will make movements regarding plastic-related problem as well.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Immanuel, this is your mentor Joon.

It is quite ironic to see the case of Coco-Cola participating social contribution activities regarding water. Knowing the fact that it require more than 9 liters of water to produce 1 liter of coke, they seem to be making up for their past deeds.

It was a pleasure for me to mentor you on past 6 months. What I feel, and realize now is that I have not been knowledgeable enough to provide more information related to different subjects. Hope you could keep up with environmental activities as well as your other works. Once again, thank you for following me.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
