Air Pollution

Do you feel that each day the air quality is being worst and worst?

Nepal is a landlocked country located in south Asia. It has a wide array of different geographical terrain within it, with large amounts of beautiful and pristine mountain ranges and valleys. It itself  is situated directly in between India and China, two economic giants in their own right as well as being the world¡¯s top contributors to air pollution. Bangladesh is also located within 30km from its southeastern region, another country that suffers from heightened pollution levels. Bangladesh is the country with is at first rank having worst air quality in world as per AQI in 2021.

Additionally, the numerous mountain ranges and valleys create popular sinks for the cities like Kathmandu, the capital city which is also economic heart of Nepal. There are several causes of pollution across the country, main reason is lack of proper regulations related to disposal waste from sources such as factories and construction sites, open burning as well as the fuels used in the many vehicles found in Kathmandu and other cities. Another element that has contributed to the uplift the air pollution was the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred in 2015, leveling many historic areas and domiciles across the capital city, leading to a massive spike in dust pollution, much of which still remains till this day due to the lack of proper cleanup conducted by the country. Many of the affected areas still yet to be repair with such massive amounts of damage. Open burning of refuse and waste is another highly pertinent issue, with the country of Nepal acknowledging that cracking down on this could occur quite easily with little resources or time being put into it, but as it stands it has yet to be enforced.

Nepal has been listed as 10th country having worst air quality in 2021 with 126 AVG.US .AQI. It seems that Nepal has to adopt the many effective major to cope with the problem of Air pollution.  Heavy vehicles should be replaced with safer means of transportation like Bicycle, bio fuel should be promoted, and improper burning of wastes should be stopped. Deforestation should be stopped and afforestation should be promoted.

Can you guys share an idea how Nepal could reduce air pollution in future?

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

China and India are two of the countries realizing rapid economic development. Furthermore, the population growth in these two countries has also been rapid. Many global environmental problems are caused with industrial growth, and it sometimes affect other countries as well. One of the ways to solve the problem mentioned in this aritcle, I think, we have to thoroughly investigate where the issues came from and encourage each countries to act as one entity in the global world.

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Sonika, this is your mentor Joon.

I can really tell the seriousness by your font. I can sympathize with you as Korea is another nation suffering form severe air pollution. From diverse studies, Air pollution could slowly affect human leading to reduction of average life expectancy of human by several years. Hope you could have some personal protection with you always.

It was a pleasure for me to mentor you on past 6 months. What I feel, and realize now is that I have not been knowledgeable enough to provide more information related to different subjects. Hope you could keep up with environmental activities as well as your other works. Once again, thank you for following me.

Sonika! sorry to hear that Nepal is suffering air pollution in recent century, the government has to enforce more laws regarding industrial emissions and set up monitorinng systems to monitor emissions from the various sectors. The youth of Nepal has to stand up and organize campaigns against emissions by targeting certain industries. Also, The government should allow neighbouring developed countries like China to undertake clean energy projects(Clean Development Mechanisms) in the country. This might help. My suggestion though. Thanks!
