An overview of CSR toward the environment in Nepal

The broader concept that any corporate organization is also a part/member of society is the whole idea behind our discussion on this topic. And this should be accepted and implemented without any hesitance. It is majorly known as CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility).

In Nepal, the culture of CSR mainly seems to be concentrated on the issues like social development, helping out the marginalized community, and related. Though there are a few instances where companies have emphasized environmental aspects which will be highlighted in this article.

Figure1: CSR Representation

CSR efforts are now required for industrial firms of a specific size and type under the IEA (Industrial Enterprise Act) of 2020, and for the Nepalese banking sector under NRB (Nepal Rastra Bank) regulations. These policies had made mandated spending a minimum of 1% of net profit in CSR. [1] There is also a provision from IEA that if the set target is not met then the corporation will be penalized for 0.75% of the annual revenue. [2] Also, section 9 of the same Act prescribes that any industry which is supposed to be significantly dangerous to health and the environment needs prior permission before establishing. [3]

Figure 2: Focus of the social responsibility

Examples of some corporations in Nepal acting responsibly toward the environment through their CSR.[4]

  • Telecommunications
    • Nepal Telecom
      • For the past five years, there has been an effort to preserve the vegetation along the Maitighar-Tinkune route in Kathmandu.
      • Another prominent NT social project concentrating on environmental protection is the Bagmati River Clean-Up campaign.
    • Ncell
      • To help with reforestation and environmental preservation, Ncell planted 50,000 trees on 33 hectares of bare land in the Dhanushadham Protected Forest (DPF) and launched a community awareness campaign.
  • Industries
    • Surya Nepal
      • Initiated the ¡®Green Birgunj¡¯ campaign.
      • The SNPL Prakriti (Nature) scheme: focuses on preserving the environment with the stated mission of ¡°Creating Enduring Value Through Environment Preservation¡±.
    • Bottlers Nepal
      • Collaboration with notable environmental organizations like Himalayan Climate Initiative, UN-Habitat, Ganesha Ecosphere, and others in recycling PET bottles in Nepal.
  • Banking
    • Mega Bank
      • Tree plantation in Lalitpur with Rotary Club of Jawalakhel Manjushree to maintain the greenery of the area.
      • Promoting cleanliness and distributing dustbins to Rajarshi Janak University at Janakpur.
    • Standard Chartered Bank Nepal
      • As part of its sustainability program "Futuremakers by Standard Chartered," contributed Rs 3.72 million to Maiti Nepal.

Social contributions from the corporate sector should be a must thing to do whether it is envisaged in policies or not. As these sectors gain everything from the society they live in, giving in return should be an integrated approach from such corporations. But, the trend in Nepal in environmental CSR was mainly cleaning activities or plantation, this must be widen as soon as possible in the diverse field like clean energy, combating climate change, and R&D of new solutions to environmental problems.

Hello Govinda, this is your mentor Chelwoon.

Someone can think, ¡°What? Only 1% of total sales?¡±. However, if you look into financial statements of large companies in detail, you will realize how big that figure is. I remember that another ambassador wrote an article regarding Nepal Telecom.
In Korea, SK Telecom supplied eco-friendly cookstoves to Myanmar!

    Thank you for the article!

    Regards,
    Chelwoon

Hello Govinda, this is your mentor Joon.

It is nice to see the lists of CSRs of companies being hold around the world. Companies should always remember that they are able to make profits thanks to the help of both society and environment and should always return their positive influence back to the fields they owe.

It was a pleasure for me to mentor you on past 6 months. What I feel, and realize now is that I have not been knowledgeable enough to provide more information related to different subjects. Hope you could keep up with environmental activities as well as your other works. Once again, thank you for following me.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
