NATURE AND I (July Thematic Report)

by Roselyne Awiti | 31-08-2022 17:29 recommendations 0

Nature is magical. With its beauty,  looking at it undoubtedly rejuvinates one and brings a sense of satisfaction.

Growing up, I liked to spend time near the famous Lake Victoria which is roughly 300 meters from our home. Watching the waves, bat waters swim and the crocodiles and hippos do their thing whenever they made themselves available on the shores. This formed my daily routine and whenever I was denied a chance to do this, I could either sneak having accepted to face the consequences later or let that be one of my bad days!

Anyway, the Lake being our main source of water made it close to impossible for my parents to deny me this golden chance. If they tried, I just walked out with a jerican and the thought of bringing back this highly sought after commodity(water) made them say a yes.

I didn't understand the connection since it was simply satisfying to me to get it done everyday, I mean seeing the water move, birds come to "shower" in this water was so enticing to me as a kid. I bet you also craved to see this when you were young, mimick the actions as you play around with your fellow kids.

On other ocassions, I  would visit the small forest around to pick the wild fruits or identify the unique tree species and carry their leaves home.

I remember one time I carried a leaf that made me and my fellow siblings have skin rashes all over our bodies. This made canes land on my body but I didn't care; I had to do what I loved only to be careful to never carry with me any leaf while going back home.

Additionally, I hated seeing litters  thrown anyhow. This to me made the green grass not attractive as it naturally is. Therefore, I made it a routine waking up early in the morning sweeping our compound and picking littersa in the green grass. I bet this is what made my teachers settle on me as the head of environmental club while in my lower primary and later the school president while in my Class Eight.

Here, the little girl I was was in charge of overseeing the cleaning of the school compound and ensuring proper dumpimg of litters in the school pits, cleaning of the school latrines and ensuring the cleanliness of all classes.

I later discovered another aspect of nature beyond the lake and the forest. In my highschool days, we had a trip to KitMikayi rock in Kisumu, Kenya.

Wow! This was amazing. First we were welcomed with traditional Luo songs from the traditional dancers depicting the Luo culture and brief description of the rock which is a major tourist attraction site in Kisumu. To my surprise this was these individuals source of income. They were paid to entertain guests visiting this site. So nature pays too!

Have you ever seen a rock on top of another? Looking at them, the top rock seems to be falling but it's stable. To my surprise, this rock "cries" at certain specific times without any reason. This was interesting and I had to climb to the top most rock to see if there is any hole-like spot in these many rocks which I found none and learnt that it was nature taking it course. I recommend you to this place maybe you'll have another discovery to write about.

Visiting the national parks, various fores zones in the country, Lakes, now the desire to visit the sandy beaches in Mombasa to being part of Tunza Eco-generation and desire to practice environmental Journalism, I discovered my great connection with nature.

To protect, protect and always protect it is my pledge because I am in love with it! I can't stand seeing its destruction. I will do whatever it takes to protect nature.

Hello Roselyne, this is your mentor Joon.

Nature is a place where we belong. We live on nature, breathe, thrive and return the nature in the end. No matter how important the nature is, mankind is busy on collapsing it either they mean it or not. It should be stopped.

It was a pleasure for me to mentor you on past 6 months. What I feel, and realize now is that I have not been knowledgeable enough to provide more information related to different subjects. Hope you could keep up with environmental activities as well as your other works. Once again, thank you for following me.

Well read your article, and let's keep up!

    Best,

    Joon
