According to WHO, "Air pollution is the contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere." WHO data suggests that 99% of the population globally breathes air that contains a high level of pollutants and exceeds WHO standards, with low and middle-income countries being the most exposed to it. Causes Air pollution is caused by both natural sources as well as artificial sources. The natural sources are wildfires and ash from a volcano. Various human-induced activities cause air pollution, like motor vehicles, Household combustion devices, industrial facilities, and forest fires are significant sources of air pollution. The culprit is most definitely the combustion of fossil fuels. EFFECTS ON HUMANS Since humans play a huge role in causing air pollution, it's only fair to start discussing the effects of air pollution on humans first. The most apparent side effect is that humans are at a high risk of developing health problems. The short-term effects include such as pneumonia and irritation to the nose, eyes, and skin. Long-term effects include lung cancer, lung and heart diseases, and severe respiratory issues. EFFECTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT Air pollution causes acid rain. When sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide mix with water droplets in the atmosphere, it causes nitric acid and sulphuric acid are known to be highly harmful to vegetation. When plants are exposed to air pollution for a long time, their growth gets stunted. Air pollution is also exacerbating the problem of climate change as it contributes carbon footprint to the atmosphere.
