WHAT IS OZONE DEPLETION?

Ozone depletion has been defined as the thinning of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. Chemical compounds of gaseous chlorine or bromine released from industries and human activities causes the ozone layer to deplete.

EFFECTS OF OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

Ozone layer depletion significantly impacts humans, wildlife, marine life, and the environment in general. As far as humans go, Various studies have shown that an increase in the UV-B rays has increased the risk of skin cancer, sunburns, eye cataracts, rapid aging, weak immune system, and blindness. Moreover, even animals are prone to skin and eye cancers due to direct exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Ozone layer depletion also causes a decline in plant productivity since plants are severely affected by intense UV rays. Their growth gets stunted, and flowering and photosynthesis get affected.

SOLUTIONS TO COMBAT OZONE LAYER DEPLETION

  1. There should be minimal use of cars- if possible, try to walk or cycle to places of short distances instead of using a car and try to lower your carbon footprint.
  2. BUY LOCAL PRODUCE- It's a good idea to buy your local fruits and vegetables and to avoid all the imported stuff because more nitrous oxide will be produced in the atmosphere as more distance is traveled.
  3. The use of nitrous oxide should be prohibited.
