WHAT IS OZONE DEPLETION? Ozone depletion has been defined as the thinning of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. Chemical compounds of gaseous chlorine or bromine released from industries and human activities causes the ozone layer to deplete. EFFECTS OF OZONE LAYER DEPLETION Ozone layer depletion significantly impacts humans, wildlife, marine life, and the environment in general. As far as humans go, Various studies have shown that an increase in the UV-B rays has increased the risk of skin cancer, sunburns, eye cataracts, rapid aging, weak immune system, and blindness. Moreover, even animals are prone to skin and eye cancers due to direct exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Ozone layer depletion also causes a decline in plant productivity since plants are severely affected by intense UV rays. Their growth gets stunted, and flowering and photosynthesis get affected.
