Extreme weather in Chad (floods)

by Fermaud ADOUMADJI MBAIORNOM | 24-09-2022 05:18 recommendations 0

Today we face climate change, another unforeseen (and undesirable) development that has become part of our lives: global warming is accelerating. This phenomenon continues to intensify the global hydrological cycle, i.e. the continuous circulation of water on the Earth and in the atmosphere, and results in changes in the precipitation regime, floods, but also by droughts.

This years the consequences of the floods are revered in Chad. As of August 30, the provisional toll of the floods is 442,228 people affected at different levels (i.e. 71,421 households) in 13 of the 23 provinces, including N'Djamena. The province of Logone Occidental has the highest number of victims with 147,129 (21,627 households), followed by Mandoul with 82,608 (13,768 households) and Sila with 77,357 (13,703 households). As a reminder, 256,000 people were affected by the floods in 2021 and 388,000 in 2020.

Forced to flee their homes, victims of landslides or rising waters, thousands of people have suffered the consequences of torrential floods in Chad in recent weeks. Currently more than 2000 victims have taken refuge in schools because they have no roof following the floods. Floods and droughts also upset crop cycles, as well as livestock rearing, and thus cause vicious and prolonged cycles of poverty. Many of the farmers during my survey told me about the efforts made to protect their land from flooding. Crops are flooded with water causing rot and losses.

Climate change has affected all sectors in Chad and especially for a population living below the poverty line like Chad, it is important to come to the aid of this population. Houses collapsed, human lives lost, crops submerged, material damage affecting the economic sector, weakening it and slowing take-off.

Faced with these problems, it is important to be aware of and protect our environment and to fight against climate change. It is also important that decision-makers, major polluters, reduce their gas emissions and use technologies for sustainable development. It is also important that donors think of developing countries by helping them in their action plan against climate change.

Financial needs for an appropriate response are estimated at US$11 million. Now is the time to act to save lives and restore the livelihoods of those affected if we want to reduce their level of vulnerability. Building the climate resilience of Nile Basin countries requires pursuing regional action to better anticipate floods and droughts, as well as building capacity to plan and implement measures to mitigate these risks. heavy consequences.

Hello this is your mentor Minkyung.

Thank you for sharing the events that occurred in Chad recently. I was devastated to hear that flood had caused so much damage. I feel that the best way to reduce damage is to be fully aware of the causes and prevent the damages beforehand.

For the record, as mentor Yoon mentioned, it would be better if you could include the references of your data.

Thank you for your report :)

    Thank you dear Mentor Yoon,
I was going to put the references but I had deemed unnecessary. So I take this remark into account to integrate it soon.

    Hi, Fermaud ADOUMADJI MBAIORNOM!
    This is your mentor, Yoon.

I am very soory to hear about the floods occurred in Chad this year.

You did well in concretizing the damage of the floods through detailed information. I can clearly see how devastating the floods were.

Your report would be even better if you provided references of those data.

Excellent work in writing the first monthly report about extreme weather!
I am looking forward to reading your next report!
