Fast Fashion is a term used for the textile industry which has various fashion models that alternate in a very short time, and uses standard quality raw materials, so they tend not to be durable or long lasting. This fashion model only prioritizes the latest trends, where her collections are often displayed at Fashion Week fashion shows. After that, if it is no longer trending, the clothes will be thrown away. Fast fashion allows general consumers to buy trendy clothes at affordable prices, so this trend is quite "proliferating", thanks to cheaper clothing prices. Fast fashion has various models that alternate in a short time, and uses low-quality raw materials, so they don't last long. This system causes fast fashion to become one of the largest contributors of waste in the world that can pollute the environment.
The concept of fast fashion works because it fulfills market demand by producing clothes in large quantities and in fast time. This strongly supports the consumptive lifestyle where one can get a stylish look at a low price. As a result, the fast fashion industry often does not pay attention to the negative impact on the environment. Usually factories use textile dyes that are cheap and dangerous, so they can cause water pollution and pose a risk to human health. The materials used also have a significant adverse impact on the environment and environmental ecosystems. Mass production of clothing uses thousands of liters of water, which of course has an impact on the availability of water in the world. Textile dyeing is also the second largest water polluter in the world. The rest of the water from the dyeing process is often dumped into ditches or rivers. In fast fashion, many use synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic, which take hundreds of years to decompose. This industry also often uses cheap and dangerous textile dyes. The impact is water pollution and poses a risk to human health. The public's attention is growing and looking further into the impacts of global environmental damage caused by poor management and systems in the fast fashion industry. Criticism from an environmental perspective also stems from the same problem, namely in the context of ¡°fast fashion¡± and the opportunity for consumers to buy more clothes at lower prices. Furthermore, increasing consumption patterns globally have created millions of tons of textile waste in landfills. There are several things that can be done to reduce and overcome the impact of fast fashion culture, including: - Reuse Outfits. Before buying clothes, you should first identify the selected brand. Then, make sure the clothes you buy are made of environmentally friendly and durable materials so they can be reused. - Thrifting (Buy Used/Secondhand Clothes). Buying used clothes can certainly prevent unused clothes from becoming waste. In addition, buying used clothes also tends to be more economical. - Recycle Textile Materials. Although the recycling of textile materials is still little done by the fashion industry. However, some brands have started to implement it. They offer to process old textile materials from consumers to be transformed into new products. - Recycle Old Clothes. Clothing that can no longer be used can be repurposed. For example, clothes that have been torn can be cut and used as rags to reduce the use of single-use tissue paper.
