Environment and health [November Free Report]

Human health and wellbeing depend on a clean environment. In addition, the surrounding environment may contain stressors that are harmful to health, such as noise, dangerous chemicals, and air pollution. Climate change has a negative impact on the health of the EU population through heatwaves, floods, and changes in the distribution of vector-borne diseases. More broadly, ecosystem services like freshwater access and food production are threatened by climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation, which can have an adverse effect on human well-being.

The state of the environment has a direct impact on human health and wellbeing. Clean air and water, rich land for growing food, as well as energy and material inputs for production, are all provided by good natural surroundings. Additionally, green infrastructure helps to control the climate and stop flooding. Additionally, having access to green and blue places offers significant chances for recreation and promotes wellbeing. At the same time, exposure to harmful substances, loud noises, and contaminated air occurs frequently through the environment.

According to a World Health Organization (WHO) study on illness prevention through healthy environments, environmental stresses are responsible for 12–18% of all fatalities in the 53 countries of the WHO Europe Region. Reducing sickness and improving human health can be accomplished through improving the environment's quality in key areas like air, water, and noise.

The leading environmental health risk factor for heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and lung cancer in Europe is air pollution. According to reports, air pollution kills around 400 000 people prematurely each year in the EU. People who are irritated by noise pollution from traffic and businesses may have trouble sleeping, which may increase their risk of heart disease and high blood pressure.

The exposure to dangerous substances is another major worry. In their daily lives, people might be exposed to a wide variety of chemicals through contaminated food, water, and air, consumer products, and environment. Due to the characteristics of some hazardous chemicals, it will take some time before reduced emissions result in decreased exposure because these compounds remain in the environment and bioaccumulate in the food chain. The quantity and variety of chemicals now in use as well as the ongoing expansion in chemical production further imply that human and environmental exposure will continue to rise. This raises questions regarding the potential health impacts of long-term exposure to chemical combinations, particularly during vulnerable life periods including early childhood, pregnancy, and old age.

The consequences of climate change include heat waves, modifications in the patterns of infectious diseases and allergies, and other serious health problems.

Strong regulations for bathing water quality are in place across the EU, and they have been progressively improving over time as a result of sewage system improvements, better waste water treatment, and a decline in farm pollution.
