[December Free Report] Holidays and their impact on waste

by Kyi Nue Chan Myae Win | 31-12-2022 17:52 recommendations 0

The Christmas holidays were not long ago, and the New Year is around the corner. It is holiday season!

According to the reports, Household waste increases by more than 25% from Thanksgiving to New Year¡¯s. The additional waste - in the form of food, shopping bags, packaging, wrapping paper, bows and ribbons - contributes to an additional 1 million tons of trash entering landfills each week during that time frame, the report said.

While celebrating the holidays, there are better options for the environment that people can choose from. Here are some tips for more sustainable holidays.

  • You should send e-cards instead of paper cards or else try to buy recycled cards.
  • Wrap gifts in reused wrapping paper, newspaper.
  • Save and reuse old gift bags that you¡¯ve received gifts in. (If you have an Asian mom, you definitely know this.)
  • Buy an artificial tree instead of a real one.
  • Buy LED lights and make be sure to shut off any decorative lights when you aren¡¯t home or when you go to bed to reduce energy consumption.
  • Cut back on festive food waste.
