[December Themetic Report ] Waste

Sorry everyone that I could not post my article on time. I was a bit busy with my graduation and I am happy to share with you all that I finally graduated with my Bachelor¡¯s degree in Agriculture from the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science (IAAS).

Do you have noticed the pot made of cropped pieces of plastic while roaming around the park or road? This is simply an example of reuse. Reuse means to find out new alternatives and use things that otherwise would have been left over somewhere which is made possible through recycling. Recycling means turning some things old and useless (plastic mugs) into something that is new and useable (picnic benches). Recycling is one of the methods to reduce or manage waste that is usually undegradable in nature. It helps to reduce carbon footprint, reduce greenhouse gases, prevent pollution, and so on.

Covanta energy corporation is one of the leading waste management countries in the world. Covanta was founded in 1939 in New Jersey, United States however, they entered the waste business in the early 1980s. They were four decades ahead in their thinking on sustainability, inventing the best negative carbon solutions. The vision of Covanta is to modernize the industry and help build a cleaner world through a pledge of responsible disposal and develop the technology to achieve it. The company has sustainably diverted over half a billion tons of waste from landfills. At the present, they divert nearly 10% of the waste generated in North America annually. Covanta diverts 21 million tons of waste from landfill annually, 1.1 million tons of materials are reused or recycled annually, 550,000 tons of metal are recovered from waste, and 100 million gallons of wastewater are recycled annually. They have enhanced technological innovations that facilitate a negative carbon solution for society¡¯s waste. Covanta is the world¡¯s largest Waste -to -energy provider.

In late 2021, they transferred into the private sector after being acquired by the EQT Infrastructure V fund, a global investment organization specializing in sustainable growth. They work to do the things that are truly transformational that make concrete, near-term and lasting changes for the better in pursuit of their goal to be the most sustainable provider of waste solutions. Covanta volunteers their time and resource to local groups and initiatives promoting environmental justice programs, fighting climate change, educating their neighbors, and helping others to do the same. Covanta strives to make a positive significant difference not limited to their industry but instead for the people they serve, the planet we share, and the future we seek.

Hello, this is your mentor Minkyung.

First of all, congratulations on earning your Bachelor's degree! I hope you have learned a lot throughout your academic course.
Also, thank you for sharing your knowledge on waste. Since you specifically introduced Covanta energy corporation, I think it would have been better if your title was more specific, something related to the corporation and/or what it does.

I'll be looking forward to your next report :)
