29th Ambassadorship Title: [November thematic report] Advantages and disadvantages of Lithium-ion Batteries Month 3, Report 1 Using a lithium-ion (LiFePO4) battery has various benefits and is demanding product. As a result, more and more people are using this technology for a wide range of purposes. For instance, a 2018 analysis by The Freedonia Group predicted that by 2022, the market for lithium-ion batteries would be worth $3.1 billion, growing 9.0% yearly. Intersecting trends and price drops, which have made this technology economically viable for the end-user, are the key drivers of this utilization growth in these years. It holds various advantages, such as: - Lightweight: When compared to other battery products, lithium offers the same or more energy at a weight and size that is less than half that of the other competing product. As a result, more flexibility and simpler installation is obtained. - Longer Service Life: In general, how and where a battery is used has a big impact on how long it will last. If properly handled, lithium-ion batteries are known for having a long service life. In general, lithium-ion batteries last 2 to 3 times longer than lead acid batteries. - High Energy Density: In comparison to a battery with a lower energy density, a battery with a higher energy density can offer the same amount of energy while taking up less space. Because of this, lithium-ion batteries are a good option for electric cars and for other installations too. - Low Self-Discharge Rate: All batteries self-discharge to some extent, but the amount and rate of this discharge are influenced by a number of variables, including temperature, battery type, and starting charging condition. Compared to lead acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries have a substantially lower self-discharge rate which makes it superior than other. While the discharge rate of lead acid batteries can be up to five times greater, it is normally approximately 5% in the first four hours after charging before falling to about 1 or 2% every month. - Low maintenance: One significant benefit of lithium-ion batteries is that they don't need to be maintained in order to function properly. Ni-Cad batteries have to be periodically discharged to prevent the memory effect. Since lithium ion batteries and cells are unaffected by this. It is not necessary to do this step or related maintenance operations. Thankfully, one of the benefits of lithium ion batteries is that active maintenance is not necessary. Every good has their disadvantages too. Here are some of them; - System for battery management and protection is necessary: The strength of lithium ion batteries and cells is not as high as that of certain other rechargeable technologies. They need to be guarded against being overcharged and discharged excessively. In addition, they must keep the current within acceptable bounds. As a result, one drawback of lithium ion batteries is that protection circuitry must be added to guarantee that they be kept within their safe operating ranges. - Ageing: One of the main drawbacks of lithium ion batteries for consumer electronics is that they age quickly. This depends on time or the calendar, but it also depends on how many charge-discharge cycles the battery has gone through. - Cost: The high price of lithium ion batteries is a significant drawback for consumers. They typically cost about 40% more to produce than nickel-cadmium cells. Li-ion battery technology includes a wide range of advantageous features. As a result, the technology is widely employed, and this trend is expected to continue. Making the most use of battery technology requires an understanding of both its benefits and limitations. I hope everyone got some insights on my topic. Thanks. References: |

Hello, this is your mentor Minkyung.
Thank you for sharing the pros and cons of Lithium-ion batteries. I think your report would be much more credible if you provide some statistics from reliable sources to support your opinion.
I'll be looking forward to your next report :)
