CHEMICAL RECYCLING OF WASTE PLASTICS IN VIETNAM


Plastic waste pollution is one of the largest environmental challenges in the world today. In Vietnam, the rapid economic growth, industrialization and urbanization has led to a significant increase in plastic waste, causing significant pressure on the environment, affecting people's health and other health Ecosystem.


According to the report of the Vietnam Plastic Association, the average growth rate of the plastic industry is 15%/year, reaching about 4 million tons/year. Plastic packaging products such as nylon bags, plastic bottles, cargo packaging ... account for about 36%; Building materials, household appliances and other types for electronics, electricity, and transportation industry accounts for about 64%.


Report on the Monitoring and Evaluation of Plastic Waste on Vietnam Coast in 2020 of the International Union of Nature Conservation (IUCN) also shows that Vietnam is one of the countries with the amount of plastic waste discharged out. The most sea in the world, with an average of the amount of plastic waste discharged into the sea, is about 0.28 to 0.73 million tons (equivalent to 6% of the total amount of ocean plastic waste). Along with the increase of plastic products has led to a large amount of plastic waste discharged into the environment, not only causing environmental pollution and ecosystem, but also greatly affecting the health of the people.


However, only 11% to 12% of plastic garbage and nylon bags are processed and recycled in line with laws, with the majority of the remaining material being dumped, burned, or burned off. The most of plastic garbage produced in the meantime by regular life and human use has not been categorized at the source. Although scrap plastic produced by manufacturing facilities is extensively collected and supplied to recycling facilities, its recovery value is low due to a poor source of solid waste classification from daily life. The limited ability to classify rubbish and the lack of public knowledge of the negative impacts of plastic waste make it difficult to manage plastic waste.


Grasping the situation, the Vietnamese government has issued decisions and improved policies with the goal by 2025, Vietnam will use 100% of nylon bags - environmentally friendly packaging at the centers of trade centers, commerce, supermarket for living purposes to replace nylon bags that are difficult to decompose; ensure collection, reuse, recycling and handling 85% of the amount of plastic waste generated; minimize 50% of plastic and ocean waste; strive for 100% of tourist resorts, tourist accommodation, hotels without using nylon bags that are difficult to decompose and disposable plastic products; Gradually reduce production and use of nylon bags that are difficult to decompose, disposable plastic products in daily life.


In order to well implement the goals, ministries, branches and local authorities in Vietnam need to strengthen inspection and supervision of the implementation of regulations on collection and treatment of plastic waste generated from tourism activities marine, shipping, farming and fishing; minimize the disposal and loss of fishing gear; Propagating, raising awareness, changing behavior with people's plastic products, especially minimizing the use of disposable plastic products and strictly collecting and classifying garbage discharged at the source as prescribed.
