Liquid Tree and Air Quality

LIQUID3 is an alternative sustainable concept for greening spatially limited urban environments exposed to intense air pollution. Official site: https://liquid3.rs/

Everyone knows how important trees and plants are, because through the incredible process of photosynthesis the air is purified and its quality improved. However, with the enormous rate of deforestation and burning, acts that diminish the existence of these beings, our life and the life of any other living being is in danger, since one of the consequences of these attitudes against the environment still contribute to global warming - consequently increasing the greenhouse effect. It is like a row of dominoes, where when one piece (the trees) falls, all the following ones fall (air quality and side effects).

In an effort to address this problem, Dr. Ivan Spasojevic, Ph.D. in biophysical sciences and one of the authors of the project at the University of Belgrade's Institute for Multidisciplinary Research, has developed LIQUID3, a tank containing freshwater microalgae that purifies the air up is 10 to 50 times more than trees and aims to combat greenhouse gas emissions.

"The photobioreactor is a completely new biotechnological solution for air purification and oxygen production. In an aquarium with six hundred liters of water, we have algae that bind to carbon dioxide and produce pure oxygen through photosynthesis. The project was designed to be multifunctional. LIQUID3 is also a bench, has chargers for cell phones, as well as a solar panel, thanks to which the bench has lighting at night. The municipality of Stari grad decided to support this project that directly contributes to improving the quality of life of our fellow citizens, public health and a cleaner environment through the use of smart and innovative solutions," said Bojan Bojić, head of the Department of Social Affairs and Development Projects in Stari grad.

I found this project and how it was done very interesting, and the coolest thing is that the maintenance does not require special care, just a boost of minerals and more water at an interval of a few months and removal of a biomass between the division of the salgae. And in Serbia, the microalgae used in the LIQUID3 are super common, and can grow even in tap water. In addition, the tank has chargers attached and uses solar energy plates (i.e., renewable energy) to create light and charge the water pump. It is like a modern air purifier, simple and practical. Although in this year, 2023, a lot of controversy has arisen over this project - which is seen by some people as a replacement for trees. And what do you think about this?

Above all, the goal is in no way to replace trees, but to improve air quality in areas where it is not possible/not feasible to plant a tree, for example in urban pockets, according to the team that founded the project. Furthermore, trees are irreplaceable beings, and even though the LIQUID3 has a similar function to them in improving air quality, they deserve all the care, love, and respect in the world for all the good things they bring us!

By the way, one of the differences that I noticed while researching the LIQUID3 and our beloved trees, is that with trees it is possible for biodiversity to remain rich on our planet. Even because it is not possible for bees or birds to live and/or develop in a pond that has no trunk, branches, or leaves.

I see LIQUID3 as an extra reinforcement in areas where it is not possible or has almost no trees, because São Paulo - Brazil, for example, is among the top 100 cities with the worst air quality on the planet according to the IQAir site in 2023, and having it in some areas could help to solve this impasse. And in your country, do you think the Liquid 3 is a solution to improve air quality in any city?

Hello Yngrid! This is your mentor Yewon.
I apologize for the late comment.

You have written an interesting report about liquid trees!
I could learn a lot about LIQUID3 and it was very interesting that it can purify air 10~50 times more than other trees!
Also, the picture you added at the bottom of your report is very helpful to understand the concept easily.

Thank you for your informative report! Great job!

Hello Yngrid! This is your mentor James.

First of all, terribly sorry for the late comment!

What an interesting topic! Rapid deforestation and urbanization is reducing trees that are available to photosynthesize, thus diminishing the recycling of the natural carbon cycle. If commercialization of the Liquid Tree is available, it means that much more efficient and effective carbon recycling can be carried out artificially! This is certainly a good example of sustainable development technology.

Thanks for writing such a meaningful report! Let's keep up the good work.
