[April Theme Report] Air pollution in the USA

by Jayden Kim | 01-05-2023 03:28 recommendations 0

As one of the leaders of consumerism and a one of largest users of cars and other sources of carbon emission, the US does significantly affect its atmosphere. According to the EPA, the US in 2021 emitted 67 million tons into the atmosphere. It is obvious that with a large population and a large land size, it is inevitable that the US is going to be one of the main producers of carbon emissions and other pollutants in the air.

However, according to the EPA, between 1980 and 2021, although the population grew by 45 percent, GDP increased by 187 percent, and vehicle miles increased by 111 percent, the six main pollutants emissions dropped by 73 percent in the US. Although the US is a primary producer of emissions, the US is one of the leaders on trying to remove air pollution and to reduce their carbon emissions. The US have created hundreds of restrictions for companies, power plants, agricultural plants on what chemicals they can use and how much they can use. Last year, Biden established  53 million dollar project to help reduce air pollution in communities (EPA). According to iaq.works, the US spend almost 820 billion dollar a year for retributions and medical bills regarding air pollution due to fossil fuels. This immense amount of money shows the work the US is doing to reverse the effects that polluters in the air have caused, but also shows the failures of the US to prevent air pollution from becoming this harmful to society.

With no doubt, air pollution is a grave danger to all of the world. As both leaders of the world and the leading polluters of emissions, the US will have to focus more heavily on reducing their carbon and other polluters.

Hello Jayden! This is your mentor James!

I see that you've written about the air pollution status in the U.S for your theme report of April! It is surely concerning to hear that the U.S alone has emitted 67 million tons of carbon in 2021! Nonetheless, their efforts in reducing the emission of air pollutants are highly notable, especially regarding their active engagement and investment in air filtration and DAC technology. With their advanced R&D infrastructure and resources, I hope a nearly-100% efficient air capture device may be developed soon enough.

Thank you for your fantastic work! Let's keep it up with your next report as well.

Hello Jayden! This is your mentor Yewon.

You have shared some interesting information regarding air pollution in the USA.
As you mentioned in your report, the USA is playing a significant role in the world environment, and therefore, the USA certainly has responsibility for air pollution issues.

I'm glad that lots of efforts made by the USA to reduce air pollution had led to meaningful consequences in the decrease in the level of six main pollutants!

Thank you for sharing, and it was a very informative report with appropriate citations!
    Great job!!
