[April Free Report] No Mosquitoes in Disney World |

I read an article in Reader’s Digest about the various reasons why you don’t find many mosquitoes in Disney World. One of the reasons is that they make sure the park has no standing water. Mosquitoes are attracted to still water, and it’s an ideal environment for them to lay eggs. They built drainage ditches to remove all the water by keeping all the water in Disney parks constantly moving. Second method to get rid of mosquitoes is to spray natural insect repellent, liquid garlic. Mosquitoes are known to be vulnerable to the smell of garlic, so Disney sprays an extract around the park. The amount used is too small for the humans to smell the garlic, but mosquitoes are very susceptible to it. Third method is to stock the park’s waterways with fish that love to eat mosquito larvae, such as minnows, goldfish, and mosquito fish. If the mosquitoes should lay eggs in the park’s moving water ways, the fish would consume them before they have the chance to hatch. Last, the park has the Mosquito Surveillance Program by keeping sentinel chickens in coops all over Disney World. Their blood is monitored for mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus. Luckily the chickens don't get sick from the virus—but if they do pick it up, the Disney team knows where in the park they got it from so they can target the area for eradication. 2023 is the year Disney is celebrating its 100th anniversary. With these thorough methods I’m sure Disney will attract more consumers in next 100 years to come. |

I have to say, it was a pleasure to read such an interesting report! I didn't know Disney World was taking such measures to eradicate or prevent mosquitos within their properties! I could'v guessed about the continuous movement of water, but garlic spray and use of chickens is quite brilliant! Now I won't have to worry about mosquitos when going to Disney World in the U.S. I hope this system can be implemented in some amusement parks in Korea as well!!

I think I have heard that there is no mosquito in Disney land, but I didn't know the specific reasons!
You have introduced them, and I am impressed by the fact that they used natural methods like using liquid garlic to get rid of mosquitos!

Hi Min,
I am impressed with your article because I live in an area where malaria is a major cause of child mortality. Mosquitoes are not just a nuisance insect problem in my country, but a life-saving problem.
disney world's solutions can help people in my country to fight malaria. i hope to organise an awareness campaign on the issue.
