¡°[May Theme Report] Eco-Friendly Urban Technology¡± Thailand's Vertical Farming

by Chananan Piriyalertsak | 25-05-2023 12:10 recommendations 0

In Thailand, vertical farming is an innovative and sustainable agricultural practice. Vertical farming is an efficient method to produce food in a more space-efficient environment, given the country's limited land availability and expanding urbanization.

Vertical farming, enables the growing of crops in like the name mentions vertically stacked layers utilizing hydroponic or aerologic systems. By using this technique, farming may be done in urban areas, closer to customers, maintaining a steady local food supply while lowering the carbon footprint of long-distance travel. Additionally, there are land availability issues in Thailand's metropolitan centers. Crops are grown vertically in towers or other multi-story buildings to maximize the use of available land. Farmers may increase crop output by making use of vertical space, which results in better yields per square meter when compared to other conventional farming techniques. In Thailand, water shortage is a problem in many areas, especially during the dry seasons. In order to use less water, vertical farming uses effective irrigation methods like drip irrigation or recirculating water in this hydroponic system.  This system also has the ability to catch and recycle water, which lowers total demand. Another benefit is the reduction of the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers by enabling a more controlled and sterile environment. Since diseases and pests are kept to a minimum the system, the product is healthier and more naturally grown produce. This element aligns with the rising customer desire for pesticide-free and organic food. A variety of crops, including leafy greens, herbs, microgreens, and even some fruits, can be grown with this technique. Farmers have the freedom to experiment with different kinds of crops all at once. This variety supports local agricultural innovation, improves nutrition, and fosters food security. Additionally, Thailand's innovations in vertical farming technology have the potential to be exported and shared with other nations that face comparable difficulties.

While vertical farming is still relatively in its early stages in Thailand, it holds promise as a sustainable solution to address the country's food security, land scarcity, and water resource challenges. Continued advancements in technology, increased awareness, and supportive government policies can further accelerate the growth and adoption of vertical farming practices in Thailand's urban areas.

Hello Chananan!! This is your mentor James.

First of all, sorry for the late comment!

I've heard about this concept of vertical farming in urban areas! As you've precisely mentioned, vertical farming enables farming practices to be carried out in urbanized regions with minimal use of land. It also contributes in lowering carbon levels in the surrounding atmosphere and also lowers the transportation costs of the products!

Thanks for writing such a meaningful report! Great work.
