Protecting Our Oceans

by Dafford Owino | 27-05-2023 03:06 recommendations 0

The recent news about the enormous seaweed mass has finally reached the shores of the United States, specifically in Key West, Florida. This sargassum blob is estimated to weigh over 13 million tons and spans a width twice that of the continental United States. As this seaweed reaches our beaches and begins to decompose, it will release hydrogen sulfide, which not only emits an unpleasant odor but also poses health risks to humans and marine life in the vicinity.

These colossal and disruptive sargassum blooms could potentially become the new norm due to the effects of climate change and rising water temperatures. This situation spells disaster for our beaches, as we are already witnessing the impact of greenhouse gas pollution on our oceans and the planet as a whole. It is crucial that we take immediate action to combat climate change before these circumstances worsen.

In March, the Ocean Conservancy applauded the release of the Ocean Climate Action Plan (OCAP) by the Biden administration. This groundbreaking plan is the first of its kind and demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding our oceans while addressing the climate crisis. With this plan, we now possess a comprehensive strategy that outlines how the United States can harness the potential of the ocean to provide climate solutions and protect coastal communities from the impacts of climate change. It is time to put this plan into motion.

We require advocates for our oceans, individuals like yourself, to call upon the United States to fulfill our global obligations in combating the climate crisis. It is crucial to urge our leaders to take decisive action on climate change before it becomes too late.

Climate change stands as the most significant threat our oceans face. I implore you to join me in our efforts to implement ocean climate solutions that will safeguard our oceans and beaches for generations to come.

Hello Dafford!! This is your mentor James.

First of all, sorry for the late comment!

13 million tons of seaweed! I cannot even imagine the actual size of the blob. I also didn't know that the sargassum blob emits hydrogen sulfide, which a hazardous and flammable toxic species. I do think that global warming and sea level rising contributed to this devastating phenomenon, but I'm still not quite sure the direct connection between those two..! Nonetheless, I definitely agree that climate change is the most threatening cause to the marine environment around the globe.

Thanks for writing such a meaningful report! Great work.

Hello Dafford! This is your mentor Yewon.

First of all, the news of the sargassum blob is very surprising, and I'm worried if that is evidence of ongoing climate change.
I totally agree with your point of view that the ocean is so important to our environment and that we should protect the oceans actively!
I think all of the ambassadors are advocators for protecting oceans, so we should try hard to spread this recognition!!

Thank you for your great report!
