Tasks for preventing desertification and resolving water shortage problems in Mongolia

by | 26-11-2011 00:25 recommendations 0

Anti-desertification enterprises must induce the local residents? active participation not only through environmental effects but also through economic benefits and must be accompanied by consistent education and promotion for broad participation (Yoo Hyang Ran, 2008). The government, which is the main agent of the anti-desertification movement, must proactively and voluntarily conduct promotional activities that raise awareness about desertification and its prevention. The government should motivate the local residents to play active roles in anti-desertification business projects. It is also necessary to build international cooperation among the five Northeast Asian countries South Korea, China, Japan, North Korea, and Mongolia. These countries have the opportunity to collaborate to combat desertification by actively utilizing existing authoritative opinions such as those of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UNCCD. NGOs from the neighboring countries are appropriate agents to stimulate forestation and the exchange of business activities; groups should also initiate green networks for the joint monitoring of desertification as well as develop appropriate policies and strategies for the implementation of anti-desertification programs.
