May Thematic Report: Eco-friendly Technologies

by Cheha Paik | 30-05-2023 19:49 recommendations 0

The world is confronted with increasing environmental and economic challenges from rapid urbanization and exploitation of available resources. Furthermore, these challenges are also driven by the dramatic increase in the world population and corresponding increases in the number of cities. Within these areas, technological and industrial developments mainly play a role in these problems. As a result, eco-friendly technologies otherwise known as green technologies came to be used as a tool to solve these problems without harming the environment. Being environment-friendly, these technologies are inventions that often involve: energy efficiency, recycling, safety and health concerns, renewable resources, and more.

A process commonly known that is relatable to green technology is waste-to-energy. As the name suggests, this is the process of generating energy in forms such as electricity or heat, from the primary treatment of waste. A common energy recovery strategy is obtained from Combustion. Energy recovery from the combustion of solid waste is a key part of the hierarchy of waste management, which ranks various management strategies. At a combustion facility, when solid waste is burned, the heat released from burning converts water to steam, which is then sent to a turbine generator to produce electricity. The remaining ash is then disposed of in a way where it won¡¯t cause any environmental harm. Thus, combustion can not only decrease the volume of solid waste for landfills but can also recover energy from the waste-burning process. This overall provides a source of energy and also reduces carbon emissions.

All in all, green technologies, such as waste-to-energy combustion technology, significantly addresses the issue of environmental and economic challenges the world currently faces.

Hello Cheha!! This is your mentor James.

First of all, sorry for the late comment!

I can see that you've focused on waste-to-power combustion technology! It is certainly true that combustion of municipal waste decreases the overall solid waste volume. Regarding the supply of energy for steam powered turbines, I am slightly confused to be honest. I think what you meant by "heat released from burning solid waste" actually means the conversion of solid waste to biogas (like methane), and then the combustion of that biogas to propel the steam turbines! Anyhow, I agree that this technology is one of the most important green technologies in urban areas that a lot of countries should implement.

Thanks for writing such a meaningful report! Great work.

Hello Cheha! This is your mentor Yewon.

You have introduced eco-friendly urban technology through your report!
I think waste-to-energy is a very important technology as it can contribute to both energy problems and waste management problems.
Thank you for sharing this significant technology with us! I could learn a lot from your report.

Great job! Let's keep up the good work!
