THE DESTRUCTION BEYOND OUR SIGHT

-       by Sanuli Gamage

To this day, only 4% of space has been explored, but one of the most human activities has been done up there as well, POLLUTION. As human activities in space increase, so does the impact of the environment beyond Earth.

More than 27,000 pieces of orbital debris, or ¡°space junk¡±, are tracked by the Department of Defense¡¯s global Space Surveillance Network (SSN) sensors. Since both the debris and spacecraft are travelling at extremely high speeds (approximately 15,700 mph in low Earth orbit), an impact of even a tiny piece of orbital debris with a spacecraft could create big problems[1]

The most common reason for pollution in space is due to the dislodging stages of space rockets and fragments from collisions. This forms a cloud of debris orbiting the Earth. As any kind of pollution does, the effect of space pollution results in consequences for humans as the cloud of debris pose a significant threat to operational satellites or spacecrafts. A single collision in space generates more debris increasing the likelihood of future collisions. To reduce this problem, technologies are being developed for active debris removal and designing satellites with built-in mechanisms so that they can also contribute to the mitigation of space debris.

Another reason is due to the gases and chemicals released into the atmosphere in rocket launches, potentially leading to contamination of the space environment. The chemicals include hydrazine and nitrogen tetroxide which can remain in space for extended periods. Fortunately, efforts are underway to explore greener propellants and design rockets with improved disposal mechanisms to mitigate chemical contamination.

While it is true that extraction of space material is required for further studies, it may disrupt their natural composition and affect their stability which will in turn affect Earth. To minimize the environmental consequences, promoting responsible resource utilization will be very useful.

Currently, space exploration is done individually by the countries that have the resources to aid it. This increases the pollution taking place in space as many spacecrafts and satellites are sent up to space. This issue can be resolved if these countries agree to use a common ground to carry out space exploration so that the pollution level minimizes and the wonders beyond that are yet to be discovered can be carried out more efficiently and effectively.

Preserving the space environment is crucial for the continued exploration and utilization of space. It is essential to prioritize sustainable practices to minimize our impact on this fragile frontier. With further advancements in technology, the development of innovative solutions to aid the issues of space pollution which include active debris removal missions and improved propulsion systems that limit chemical contamination. Only through collective efforts and international cooperation can we protect the vast expanse that lies beyond our home planet.

Hello Sanuli! This is your mentor Yewon.

Before I start, I apologize for the late comment.

You have written a report about space pollution!
Especially, it was interesting that the gases and chemicals released into the atmosphere in rocket launches can contribute to contamination of the space environment.
I hope we can find an effective solution to the space pollution problem!

Thank you for your meaningful report! Great job!

Hello Sanuli! This is your mentor James.

In this report, you've explained the main causes of space pollution and its calamitous consequences. Among the results of constant debris accumulation, I think the increased risk of collisions during future missions and expeditions is the most detrimental effect. As you've mentioned, presently operational satellites may also collide with the fragments, which would harass its functions of information transmittance.

Thank you for your fantastic work! Let's keep it up with your next report as well.
